I'm completely out of my depth with this but Col tells me that you can plot a route on the Viewranger website then download it to your phone.

Yes,having found out the input / output functions of both apps as in my previous post I had a look on the website. Users have a profile where their tracks can be saved and as Col says, plotted and sent to the device. Generic GPS devices have this function. My other apps that use the GPS also have corresponding websites for recording and tracking.

Margaret & I are walking up to Hare Hill this afternoon to have a look around armed with a route on my phone which follows the outer oval feature . On the Viewranger website you can plot a route on a Google Earth view, then transfer it to an OS map on your phone. Fingers crossed that I can make it work!

It was bitterly cold up on Hare Hill this afternoon and boggy underfoot but we navigated round the oval shaped feature and found a wide ditch, if not a double ditch surrounding the raised area. We also found evidence of modern water gathering on the line of the ditch at the southern end...3 brick chambers with iron covers and the sound of running water, so possibly natural springs? We found a large stone at the southern end of the raised area and one at the north end too. Looking back from Stone Pit Hill we could see what looked almost like terracing. Here are some photos.

We pinpointed one feature to go and investigate which shows up clearly on the NLS side by side viewer. There is a small circle on the map, on the contour line beneath the "T" in Allotment. It still shows on the aerial photo as a small black dot south east of the ring cairn.






On the ground it is a slightly sunken area, very wet with humps that might be large stones very thickly covered in mossy growths. Possibly and old spring or well? We should have taken some sort of stick to poke at things with! Seem to remember John carrying something a bit like an old car aerial when we were investigating the corn mill site....

They were definitely there earlier Ian. They have disappeared from the gallery so I'll try reloading them.

They are back in now. That has happened before a month or two back.

I could see they were supposed to be in the same album as your previous uploads. I have looked at the gallery settings but all seems to be as it should.

Wendy, nonsense! You are a very competent historian and a good observer. That's where we all start. We get better as we get older as the memory banks fill up. I reckon that any skills I have started when I started to get curious about all the things I was seeing through the windscreen of the wagon cab as I criss-crossed the country. I wanted to know who built the roads and bridges, then I found Smiles and Telford and I was hooked.

It was an excellent talk and a fascinating subject, good turn out too!
