This clock looks to have been moved to the old fire station in Earby.

Was that the Council Offices? I have a dim memory of it and the clock in the 1950s.

Yes it was the council offices on Colne Road. The clock is on the council offices on Victoria Road now, beside the bus station.

Riley Street then and now. In the old image it appears that Bethel's shop is getting a bread delivery.

Thanks Wendy, I've been told that when Johnny Pickles went as apprentice to William Brown in 1903 his shop was near that gatehouse because most of his work came from the mill.

Harry Taylor, blacksmith in the 1970s, in the forge at Victoria Mill.

That was in Brown's old forge I am sure. I rebuilt a gate at a house on Cragg Row at Salterforth that had been made by Harry Taylor.

Image

I was wrong! This was made by Hartley Wilkinson who was also a blacksmith in Earby.
Funny, I was sure it was Harry Taylor but I have to trust my own captions. I was told that Mr Wilkinson lived at 9 Cragg Row.....

The Station Hotel.
In an earlier image I uploaded here there was a bowling green which has now vanished.
The stone arch was still in place at this time though and what appears to be temporary buildings have been erected.

That looks like a WW2 era image to me Mick.

I think Wendy has mentioned the purpose of the prefabs before but I may be wrong.

We have that photo and other similar ones in our archive, they were taken by Colin Wilkinson the Earby UDC surveyor in the 1960's. The prefab building was an old nursery. Another view taken by Colin Wilkinson, but the vehicles would suggest 1950s.

Here's an area I am unfamiliar with. Probably all demolished by the time I got to Earby in 1964.

The Wooden Hut.
The obligatory stopping off point for all kids heading to Alder Hill Street or Springfield schools.
Here's was where you stocked up on bubble gum, chocolate logs and/or a bag of boiled sweets.

Sadly, it's now a forgotten corner..
