A plain and simple bit of music. First recorded byThe Carter Family on a 78rpm disc in 1928/ That's 98 years ago. I think I've been listening to it for about 65 of those years. Catchy but quite sad. . . . . . :smile:

I'll twine 'mid the ringlets
Of my raven black hair,
The lilies so pale
And the roses so fair,
The myrtle so bright
With an emerald hue,
And the pale aronatus
With eyes of bright blue.

I'll sing, and I'll dance,
My laugh shall be gay,
I'll cease this wild weeping
Drive sorrow away,
Tho' my heart is now breaking,
He never shall know,
That his name made me tremble
And my pale cheek to glow.

I'll think of him never
I'll be wildly gay,
I'll charm ev'ry heart
And the crowd I will sway,
I'll live yet to see him
Regret the dark hour
When he won, then neglected,
The frail wildwood flower.

He told me he loved me,
And promis'd to love,
Through ill and misfortune,
All others above,
Another has won him,
Ah! misery to tell;
He left me in silence
No word of farewell!

He taught me to love him,
He call'd me his flower
That blossom'd for him
All the brighter each hour;
But I woke from my dreaming,
My idol was clay;
My visions of love
Have all faded away.

No reaction. . .

Ah well I enjoyed it and I know a lot more about Mennonites and Anabaptists now. :smile: Why do Christains feel the need to kill anyone who has differences of opinion about religious doctrines. I think I'm well out of it.

Mennonites are a group of Anabaptist Christian communities that emerged from the 16th-century Reformation, named after their leader Menno Simons. They are known for their commitment to peace, nonviolence, and a literal interpretation of the Bible, emphasizing community, discipleship, and service. While they share core beliefs, different groups vary widely in their level of adherence to traditional practices, with some embracing modern technology and others maintaining a simpler, more traditional lifestyle.

I found this later kast night, and promptly busrt into tears. It's the most poignant thing I've ever seen and certainly struck a nerve. Most short items on Youtube now are AI generated, or staged by actors, and i would think this is too. Powerful image though.

Its not a song I was aware of , but have books of the "protest" era of the 1960s with Pete Seeger, Ewan McCall, Fred Dallas Joan Baez and similar.
We are coming to that time of carol singing. "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear", (Edward Sears .Unitarian in the US written 1849) , the last stanza of that talks of hushing war, ye men of strife ( which one in particular?) at least two tunes for this one and I normally get the wrong one .

Not into the song but love the headstone clip.... :biggrin2:

My experience of YouTube was slightly more prosaic but no less impotant. I knew most of the facts but still found it astonishing that such practices can be allowed.
