Ian pinpoints the exact location, with Stanley and Plaques familiar with it.

The carved relief by local sculptor Fiona Bowley is one of several in the Centenary Gardens on Fernlea Avenue. Each relief depicts an aspect of Barnoldswick's history. The one pictured refers to the canal, the advent of the railway and Billycock Bracewell.

There's a few images of the gardens at http://www.visitbarnoldswick.co.uk/expl ... ploreid=12

Same but for moving the cutting tool on a lathe? Mind you, it doesn't look heavy enough for that.

I think we've reached the point where I have to come clean... It's the clockwork timer that used to control a gas street lamp. They had a small pilot light and the timer opened the main supply valve and shut it as necessary. This did away with the old lamplighter who used to go round each evening and morning. It has an eight day mechanism and so only needed winding once a week. Try this one....

I think David is right. I have a similar former where you drop one of the legs into a "blacksmiths block" that has numerous holes in it.

Near enough. It's a small anvil that drops into the stake hole on a larger one. Very handy for small jobs.
Someone else's turn?
