Yes Liz, you'll find that after the first boiling there is a lot of froth on the water. That's the salt and nitrates. Pour it off, wash the joint and start again. You'll find you need to inject a bit of flavour in the second boiling. I used vinegar and pepper. Cider and honey with spices would be good.....

Beef casserole with suet and mature cheddar dumplings, I always use new potatoes for this as they do not disintegrate before the beef is tender. Also steeped marrowfat peas, these are steeped 3 times as opposed to cooked and finish up whole, not mushy.

It will chill you to the marrow to hear this, but we had Salad.
Just can't face all that hot food with our weather.
Had a good old laugh tonight watching "The Great British Bakeoff" and the contestants were having no end of problem making Baked Alaska during "heat wave conditions" of 25C.
Ha Ha...try cooking Christmas Dinner when it is 40C+ !
Try sleeping in that temperature too...

We visited the UK during the 'heatwave' in 2013. Our tour guide nearly melted when it got to 28 and said if it got to 30 the next day as was predicted he wouldn't be able to work in that heat. We loved it. I even bought a new pair of thongs in Edinburgh of all places.

We were there same time, Liz.
And it WAS hot. We were in Kent at the time and it reached 28 degrees. Hubby never slows down and is determined to be out all day and see everything he can possibly fit in. He got sunburn, but I didnt.
Different kind of heat over there...very heavy and moist...and it does feel warmer than our 28 degrees doesn't it?

Having experienced both I'd say Maz is right. I've been in almost 50C in Oz and Death Valley and I survived but I doubt if I could stand it here at home.
Two shear stew with cabbage and peas with spuds and carrots X to for dinner and tea. One helping left.... Might not go to butcher's this morning, too slippy underfoot....

I grilled three burgers yesterday to colour them and then cut them up and popped them in with a tin of chopped tomatoes, beans, peas and added vinegar and olive oil in addition to the seasoning the let the magic happen with the tomatoes as it simmered on the stove until dinnertime. Just before dinner I added the remains of the carrots and spuds and let it come to the boil. Burger and tomato stew X two for dinner and tea and there's one helping left in a bowl in the fridge....

Grilled six pork sausage to give them colour, cut them up and dropped them in a mixture of onions fried in olive oil, vinegar, beans, tomato concentrate and the usual seasonings and the whole simmered slowly on the stove for a couple of hours to let the olive oil, vinegar and tomato magic happen. Had the last bowl of yesterdays burger stew for dinner and used the cold sausage and tomato as a sandwich filler for tea. I have bread that needs to be eaten! Waste not want not! The sausage and tomato is superb......
