Watched the first of three of The Tower last night on itv. It’s on for three consecutive nights and can be binged on catch up now. It kept the attention, but sadly we had to put the subtitles on. Oddly we can watch Heartbeat, Doc Martin and other old ones with no problems, it’s just these modern day dramas.

What Channel is it on Gloria?
I recognise the problem with modern dramas and don't tell me it's my poor hearing. It's them gabbling!
Could it be that everyone is so scared of running out of time that they have to speak fast or get cut off? Listen to a judge speaking, beautifully clear and measured. Nobody is going to cut them off!

There is this theory that the faster you talk the more intelligent you are. They then reach a point where it becomes gabble and nobody understands them the result is they have to say it again now taking twice as long. What does this say for their intelligence. Chris Evens was a good example of this pseudo science.

I'll believe that Ken. Whenever I speak to anyone on the phone the first thing I ask them is whether they can clearly hear and understand me, they always say yes of course. So I ask them to speak at the same speed and attention to clarity because I am very old and deaf! The effect lasts for one response and then they go back to gabbling.
You're right, it actually takes more time, but they don't see this.
Where I notice it particularly is on the radio in an interview and I have this theory that they are trying to cram in as much as possible into their 30 seconds of fame.
Of course it could just be the fact that I am old and hopelessly out of date!

Mick, think it was only us who watched The Tower, but I’ll wait a bit longer to give our opinion.

I would surmise that Mick is using a VPN to stream UK TV but keep it under your hat. In the immortal words of Captain Mainwaring 'don't tell him your name, Pike'

I have used a VPN in the past, placing myself somewhere in London.
But they've got wise to people doing this now so neither the BBC or ITV players are accessible through that method.

I'll come clean. I do file sharing (peer to peer).

Totally illegal, I know but I can honestly say I would gladly pay the license fee for access if I could.
But I can't so this is the only way I can get us newly released British drama.

For films we have both Netflix and Amazon Prime both of which we pay a monthly fee.
My wife is a tennis nut and she has two tennis channels (again a monthly fee for each) so she is able to watch a sport that she really enjoys.

Things like Britbox are fine but it's mostly older drama which we have seen before.

Talking about older films.... Last night I watched Paths of Glory, the Kubrik film with Kirk Douglas and then by accident found that the Millennium Series by Stieg Larrson was on iPlayer so I watched the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The other two are on their as well. I'm a big fan of his. Pity he died before they were published, there would have been much more from him I think.

There were two episodes of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I watched the second last night.
I can see me reading that trilogy again before long.

Anyone watching the Kenosha murder trial live as it happens. It beats all the so called 'dramas'.
Had the summing up yesterday, and the Jury is now out. I'll be there for the verdict.
Tells us a lot about American attitudes to guns. There is no racial element to the case. ( I had to google EMT - emergency medical technician)

Lead prosecutor Thomas Binger told the court on Monday in his closing statement: "You cannot claim self-defence against a danger that you create."
Mr Binger - the assistant district attorney for Kenosha - questioned why Mr Rittenhouse broke curfew in a city he did not live in and "pretended to guard" people and property he was not familiar with.
"Consider whether or not it's reasonable for a criminal to be able to shoot himself out of a crime scene," he said. "If someone comes up to that person and tries to disarm them, do they forfeit their life?"
"He ran around with an AR-15 all night and lied about being an EMT [emergency responder]. Does that suggest to you that he is genuinely there to help?" asked the prosecutor.
Mr Rittenhouse had worked as a first responder cadet prior to the shootings. He testified last week that he provided medical aid to people that day.
Jurors were shown video, sometimes frame by frame, leading up to and after each shooting.
Mr Binger assailed the teen for showing "no regard for human life" and then fleeing the scene "like he was some sort of hero in a Western".

I watched 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' on BBC iPlayer. Beautifully made film with a fascinating plot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone. (LINK)

I tripped over this on Youtube. Clara is 91 and well worth watching, cooking and social histoory!

We watched the last episode of Angela Black the other night and then binged the last two episodes of Show Trial via on demand.

Not a fan of frankfurters - for me they're the 'sausage of last resort' - but it's not a huge expense to feed yourself with a bit of imagination. Get a wok, shop at Aldi and don't be frightened to experiment, would be my tip.

Clara's meal is what we knock up using the German Potatoes we take camping. Adding sausage and beans or a couple of chopped up rashers of bacon.

Surprising what can be knocked up in a wok. Lots of leafy green stuff, close to its use by date and sold off cheap, and a bag of 'bacon bits' makes a very tasty plate. Add a sauce of choice, even a splash of ketchup, you can't go wrong, and a bag of noodles for the carb eaters.
