There is many a fine tune played on an old fiddle. This one can't be played, but it carries on fiddling, my esteemed namesake must be splitting his sides a he strums his harp.

Not today but yesterday. In the early evening I had arrived at the end of 1941 in the book, and had started backing up my files and was ready to save all of my stuff to disc. I suddenly had the feeling that all was not well outside, something was coming. I went to the back door and opened it to call Izzy the cat in, there was a terrific flash and an instantaneous crack of thunder. Not finding Izzy I came back to find a blank white PC screen. I tried everything to get it all back, start in safe mode brought it up, but the PC then shut down again, I couldn't access any of the recovery programs, so I opted for a re-boot using the original discs, and selected to re-boot saving my work to back up, and I made the mistake of saving it to the wrong drive, C instead of D. All of the work on the book from the end of 1918 up to 1941 is gone, as is my WW2 database and much other stuff, two months of research and hard work gone in a "Flash". I feel just a tad sore.

Oh Thomo, I so feel for you.
On the burglar front, the two arrested on Friday have been released without charge...
As Stanley says, finally a lot of police activity. When I met the divisional commander on Thursday, I questioned the doubtful effect of the jockeys. (I'd a vision of lasoos and dragging through the street...). By the by, horse muck on pavements is an issue concerning many people on foot (or in wheelchairs or pushing prams) on Kelbrook Road; 14 piles by one count.
I've a couple of pics from over the weekend (including storm coloured sky). Will post if I've time before making tea.

Wendy has a much better pic on the view from hers, but here's the sky after yesterday's storm from ours.
The cloud wreathed hills are Waddington Fell and the Bowland Forest.

October 21 1966. Aberfan tips collapsed and killed 116 children and 5 teachers in the local school. After years of argument it was finally agreed that it was the fault of the NCB. This didn't stop the Disaster Fund being surcharged for part of the cost of cleaning up. (

Peter, commiserations but it happens to us all at some point. Best security I have found is to have an external hard drive and keep a copy of data on it. Keep detached from the main system when not being used. Basic principle of all archiving is to store copies away from original location.
One word of encouragement from experience. Get stuck in to re-writing and you'll be surprised how easily it comes because it's all there in your head. You'll find when you have done it that the new draft is better than the original!

With the extensive coverage of the town, on CCTV, I take it nothing unusual was captured on video then?

CCTV footage has given some clues; height, build etc. and possible sightings moving around the town. Don't know if there's anything strong enough to stand up in court...
Main problem is that the burglars aren't thick... they're operating in the back streets and yards - which aren't generally covered by the cameras.

Tesco admits to discarding 30k tonnes of fresh food every year, without saying whether it goes into landfill or whether it is because of their packaging. Maybe their prices are out of balance but #everylittlehelps

Tardis, thanks for reminding me about Trafalgar, my Great, Great, Great Grandfather was there, today I will have a "double tot"! Also to all of you, many thanks for the messages of support in light of my recent disaster, Stanley, you are right. my next act on Saturday would have been to transfer it all to a pair of DVDs, and I know where you are coming from ref, re-writing. I have had an offer of help by PM from Wendy F, her husband Colin has experience of recovering lost items, wether or not it is possible, it is still a generous offer and much appreciated. The greatest loss is the WW2 database, this took a lot of building and then restructuring to get it in chronological order, it is the key to the WW2 part of the book. Some information and pics are now back in place thanks to the original donor who has re-sent them, there are other items that I can pull from the net whilst I can still remember where I found them. Re doing nearly 100 pages would be a chore indeed, but will be done if I have to. Again, Many Thanks, onwards and upwards. Thomo.
