Why 'working class Britain'? How is that anything to do with mindless violence?
What grabbed me was the Panorama programme on the concealing of child sex abuse. I don't understand the thinking of people who say that making non-reporting a criminal offence isn't necessary. It seems to me that those who object are actually objecting to ordinary people being given protection to inform and power to affect the way the higher echelons protect their world. The professor from the LSE said that no bishops had been prosecuted in countries where they have mandatory reporting. This isn't the fault of the law, more an evidence of how the Establishment protects its own and a failure of proper process. Make it mandatory now!
On a slightly less serious matter, the Deadly Duo inspected the roof yesterday and found the gutters needed cleaning and a slate replacing. More serious is the failure of the new ridge tiles used in the refurb a few years ago. They are defective and breaking up. I've told them to put it right. They say the whole row has the same problem but how many will get competent men in to check? A stitch in time saves nine! So I join Julie in roof repairs.....

Welcome Stanley, maybe there should be a thread called roof-top affairs! Or maybe roof-top views (better crafted that one). Well what attracts my attention today is the significant birthday of Steve in Norfolk. He likes to underplay it these days (always has actually) so no bangs and whistles today but family visiting Saturday and a meal out in Norwich arranged.

We had a new roof put on last month, thankfully an ordeal I shall have not to go through again. Totally incompetent workmen and poor materials, are there no crafts men left. Amongst my acquaintenances I had a friend who in the past has done roof work for me unfortunately when I contacted him he had now retired. Second chance I asked him to recommend a roofer. To this he replied none that I would give to a friend. My fate was sealed.

Take it up with the headline writers. These meejah types are always ready to spin the worst aspect. Maybe a former member of the Labour Party should be able to recognise the working class. Ask him, it is a travesty, how ever you dress it up

I read that Tesco are going to scan your face at their petrol stations, and target advertising at you which suits your age and gender. What a joy that will be. I just got my clubcard email, and took the opportunity to update my personal details. They now think that my food preferences are kosher and halal. Two can play silly beggars.

Agreed!

We got quotes for re-roofing (together with other work needing scaffolding) a couple of years ago. We'll probably need to save up another couple of years before we can afford to get it done...

We're also getting quotes for roofing work (amongst other things) for a town centre building.

I note Hartley's post with a deep sense of gloom.

Stanley, I'll ask Pendle's housing regeneration section to investigate this.

I love it, Tripps! I'll save my Halloween mask and then go looking for Tesco petrol stations. We need Panbiker and Pluggy to design some gizmos to disrupt the electronics - or perhaps even to feed in our own choice of data. We could have them selling purple bananas or black corn flakes...mind you, I think I saw purple bananas in Tesco on a 2 for 1 last week! :laugh5:

Yes, I got stung by dodgy roofers when we were in London.

I suppose I can count myself lucky, but fortunately I now have access to good, reliable folk across all trades. When we moved up here, the house needed quite a bit of upgrading. Alarm bells went off as being new to an area, where to start? I'm not sure she should have done, but the estate agent here gave us the number of a chap who turned out to be her cousin.

He is a member of an informal group of local tradesfolk who all play golf together at the Royal Liverpool and use/recommend each other on/for jobs. So we have a good builder, carpenter (who trained as a boat builder), gas fitter, spark, plumber, lock and window man, painter and decorator and yes, roofers who have their yard just to the back of us.

Last year, our gutters were blocked so we spoke to the roofers. They came round and sorted it and said they didn't want paying as well, we (us) are locals (i.e. they are our neighbours out the back) and it only took 'em a short time. We insisted, but they just said 'buy us a pint' when we next saw them in the pub. Which we did.....

At the moment we are 'doing' the lounge, and are going to put in a wood burning stove. There's a stove shop in town, so we went there. They deal in Esse stoves, and the chap came round last night. Talking about matters we mentioned in passing we were getting a new carpet too - had enough of the stripped floorboards. He asked if we going to the carpet shop in town. We said yes. So he said, tell them you're getting a stove from me and they'll give you a discount. I asked if the fact we were getting a carpet from them meant we got a discount from him. He said that would be arranged.

As I say though, I count myself lucky here.

The defective ridge tiles. Mine are by no means the worst. It must have been a bad batch.....

We posted at exactly the same time Richard. My two men are excellent and it's so nice to be able to get hold of experience such as they have. I'd recommend them to anyone. Mind you, the ugly one up the ladder takes a bit of handling!

DAHDALEH: LABOUR DONOR MADE MULTI BILLION CASH BRIBES
http://courtnewsuk.co.uk/newsgallery/?page=2
BELGRAVIA A Labour donor and friend of Tony Blair paid almost £39million in bribes to a member of the Bahraini royal family to secure multi-billion pound aluminium contracts, a court heard today (Tues). Victor Dahdaleh, 70, paid the bungs to Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa, the minister of oil and industry and the chairman of state-owned Aluminium Bahrain BSC (Alba), jurors heard. Dahdaleh also handed around £3million in kickbacks to Bruce Hall, 61, the chief executive officer of Alba, who spent some of his ill-gotten gains on luxury property, Southwark Crown Court heard. The Jordanian-born metals magnate allegedly issued orders for the payments, totaling more than £40million, to be made using a fax machine at his home in Belgravia, central London.

Well done to all concerned. Barlick at it's best

That makes me feel a little better. Seeing slaters with the correct ladders. The guys who did my roof gave glowing references from their last three jobs, when they stripped the roof the old tiles battens and felt were thrown down into the back of the pickup truck, no roof ladders used. When they fitted the membrane I counted over 80 holes, they tried to tell me it would be alright, but I insisted on them replacing it. They then battened the surface ,again without roof ladders and tore the membrane once more. When it came to the new tiles, they were walking on them as they laid the roof and several were cracked, again I had to force replacement. Shortly after they completed the threat of high winds was on the horizon I was filled with dread, luckily it never happened. I am still in charge of a retention on the monies paid and have told the roofers it will be paid in one years time. They are not best pleased but the alternative is I release my Photographs to the H.S.E, or follow them and give my thoughts to their next victims. The final twist is that no protection was put down in the loft to collect debris so I now have to lay a third layer of insulation to seal in the dirt.

Could we have a thread on here recommending decent local tradesmen..? We went through 5 plumbers whilst doing up our house a couple of years ago and still haven't found a good one...!

The problem with my car the other day was that is smelled of burning clutch plates (curiously more when in reverse). This was despite having a complete replacement of the clutch in August. Thankfully, Tim, (Donald actually) traced the smell in my car to a sticking back brake, the disc could not be touched after a run. Reversing the car wafted the smell from the heated pads into the inside of the car. A wheel bearing on rear also needs replacing. So. all in all a good result, far better than the clutch failing again.

Pete, the business section on the site is due for revamp in the ongoing overhaul of the structure of the site. A sub forum for the subject within that section could be the way to go. I'll add it to the master plan. I have deleted all the sections with no content but I'm not doing any moving merging or creation until the database is stabilised under the current site regeneration plan.
