The smell of two shear neck end simmering quietly on the stove in the front room. I can stand cooking smells like that!
The fact that David Whipp has raised the matter of the defective roof tiles with the relevant people at the council. I shall carry on with putting it right while they decide what to do....

Glad to hear it, when I read that you would 'put it right' I thought you were going onto the roof to do a tempory fix-it job until the tradesmen arrived.

I alluded to one from Earby on the Plumbers section ( accessed from the Portal ) , Portal is useful , but gave one a Red Square = heading has postings logged in user has not read , blue square - postings user has read OR no postings ( really I guess should have been Red , Green , and Blue ).

Just looked at the first chess game in the world finals - a draw in just 16 moves. What a let down. If it was horse racing they'd be up before the stewards under the 'non triers' rules.

The difference in Town at todays act of Remembrance. More people came, and there was an interest in what has been achieved in the past two years. I again met many friends, old and new, and the group of ex RN Shipmates who tried to lead me astray after last years event. Combined with a number of lads from the Highland Regiments, they almost succeeded! It is truly great to see so many local people together at once. and putting aside political and religious idealisms, there to pay their respects to they who gave their all for us. There are now 398 names on the War Memorial, and I have had the privilege and honour of looking beyond the names set in granite, only 3 have as yet eluded me, but following a conversation with an old schoolmate, this could soon become only two. Thank you "Barlick".

The amount of hard work that is going in, unseen, into upgrading the site and keeping the streets clean. Wendy and Ian are like terriers sat watching a rat hole! As soon as a miscreant pops up they pounce and eliminate them. Ordinary members would be amazed at the amount of effort they put in just on this one aspect of the site. Then of course there is the major work in the background to get the upgraded platform on line. We are very lucky and I'm posting this to remind everyone of what is going on. It will all be worth it but I know that Pluggy and Ian particularly will be glad when they can relax. Wendy and I do what we can to assist but some things are definitely above our pay grade!

For those people who believe that Pendle Leisure should be supplying a service over the Christmas period I have been informed that both West Craven (Barlick) and Colne leisure centres will be closed from the Monday 23 Dec: to the Monday 6 Jan.
For those who have already paid their yearly subscription for a full 52 week year (less bank holidays) closing both centres smacks of sharp practice.

Here is something that will make you think...

Just saw a snippet on the News about a criminal who tried to avoid court and charges by taking off and hiding in the bush in a camper van. Before he fled, he sold his computer. The person who bought it later recognised the offender as the person who had sold him the computer. Here is where it gets interesting...
The crook had not disconnected "Cloud" from his old computer. Whilst hiding in the bush, photos he took on his Ipad were instantly transferred back to his old computer via iCloud . Police identified locations from the photos and made their arrest.

A positive outcome...but something to think about regarding Cloud.

Maz. I don't understand The Cloud...., and I don't want to! Serves him right for using technology he didn't understand.
UN appeals for $190million to fund aid to the Philippines. A Bacon painting sells for more than $140million at auction. There is a disconnection here somewhere....

A recent ebay win was a pocket watch for £1.04, the postage was £4.50. After a strip clean and reassembly it was running fine but a scratched glass was letting it down, a new glass was found at £3.95 with postage and packing of £3.99. The new owners of Royal Mail should do well with these prices. Time to return to charity shops for bargains.

In a conversation a couple of days ago with an elderly lady who lives near here, she commented on the wreath at the Memorial with the names of the Rohilla victims in the centre. It transpired that she is related by descent to three of them, as a result her details have now been passed to the team at Whitby who are organising an event for next year, she will be invited to join them. Having told her about the book that I am writing, yesterday she called round and brought several books that will be extremely useful, among them was a book written by Ken Wilson in 1981, "The Wreck of the Rohilla" This book is self illustrated with pencil drawings. That these are a credit to the author is an understatement of large proportions. Noticeable was that several of the books were printed and published by "Carrprint", how I now wish that Norman and his team were still here in business.

A useful corner shop was demolished to make way for that bank! The level of advertising on TV for many forms of gambling is now at an all time high, whilst gambling is not usually life threatening it can often lead to other serious problems. Smoking ads are banned, yet if people wish to smoke they will, British beer adverts are banned, people will still drink it if they choose to, I am sure that gamblers will still gamble without the current levels of promotion. The telephone box by the Fosters Arms was stripped of its working components several weeks ago and is now only used as a toilet, time for it go I think. The Philippines, its a shame that the aid is not arriving at the same speed as the media did, I have been to those Islands and met the people many times, they always made us extremely welcome and were very generous with what little they had. The great fuss here a couple of weeks ago about a storm In the South was but as a drop in the bucket compared to what has happened to these poor people, one of them summed up the problems very well, "We don't need cell phones, fizzy drinks and the media, we need food, water, shelter and help". It is going to be a massive logistical nightmare, the airports were never intended for what is required in the first place and are now in poor condition. Our own Navy and that of America are "on their way" and to be frank I have my doubts about what they can achieve, it is no place for kids and pretty girls however well intentioned. I speak from experience of the problems involved, and it requires a level of input and dedication above what is the norm today. The Philippines are a long way from the UK and US, yet are near to several countries that boast all manner of might, China, Japan and Indonesia, what are they doing I wonder, I believe that its time for them to give instead of take.

What strikes me is the lack of effort by the residents in working to restore their life, standing around looking for hand outs seems to be their objective, if you look at war times in England, Germany, etc. the people were out cleaning bricks, clearing roads, and generally trying to put their life back together has best they could, they didn't sit on their a-ses waiting for help.
