Staying with Mum until my brother arrives to take over. I've been out for a walk by the canal while the carer was with her. There are some very big barges moored up at Woodlesford lock, both looking like working barges of one sort or another It's all so different now to how it was 45 odd years ago when I lived at home. Lovely moorings, canal side walks and wildlife areas...all waiting for HS2 to come through on a viaduct.

Sounds like a sensible strategy Wendy! As for HS2, they're blowing hot and cold on that one, could be a long wait!

Waiting for my latest book by Piketty!
See this ARTICLE in today's Telegraph for an attack on it. Always nice to see the right wing economists thrashing around in the net. My American correspondents tell me that the Republican Party and other right wing neo-liberals are very worried about it because the general opinion seems to be that Piketty has got it right.

Doing some serious reading! I am getting on well with Stiglitz on Inequality but yesterday Piketty's 'Capital' arrived. A beautifully produced 650+ page read from Harvard University. The reviews are stunning and Martha tells me it is a good read because it is largely history but I think it's going to demand all my attention!

" but I think it's going to demand all my attention!"

I think so too. He was interviewed by Paxman on Newsnight. He doesn't look at all like you would imagine. I hesitate to comment after just watching that, and reading on here about him. My first impression is that he does not like capital. So after living prudently and aquiring assets - I can look forward to a portion of them being removed, and handed over to the Jeremy Kyle cohort. He didn't say that of course - he was very careful just to define the 'problems' but reluctant to give his solutions. I found the same in the Phi Beta Kappa lecture from Prof Martha Paas.

Forgive me if this sounds flippant. I've had the flu for 5 days now - no food since Saturday, and not thinking too clearly.

Just my impression. The other conclusion - does he write it all himself? - how can one man marshal the information required to enable him to write 577 pages?

That said - it is said to be the No 1 best seller on Amazon on all categories. Then again so was Stephen Hawkins book, but few of the buyers actually read it all, and I doubt many understood it.

I'll be doing my best David. All my correspondents tell me that it is ground-breaking and a massive achievement. Of course he has lots of help from his graduates and researchers and acknowledges this in the book, I always read that bit first.
But at the moment I'm getting through Stiglitz who is on the same track but has written the more simple guide to the same subject. I'm in training for the main event!
By the way, none of the modern economists are against capital per se, they concentrate on it's distribution and use.
Martha's lecture wasn't intended to give solutions, just to define the problem. The main hurdle to be overcome before anything is done is to persuade the general public that inequality is a problem and it's soluble.

Just watched the final. A well deserved win but personally I wanted the other guy to win. (Not giving names in case anyone hasn't watched it and doesn't want to know the result just yet.)

Butcher's day and the gas man comes between 8-10AM to do the annual service.
Later, the gas man has just rung and will be here in 30 minutes. I forgot to mention that I received the letter and was given and identity number to book online and get the advantage of the 2 hour time slot appointment but when I tried it the site refused to accept it. So I rang the 0800 number and did it on the phone. However, I pointed out to the lady that I wanted the 2 hour slot as it was their fault the site refused to accept the number they gave me. She gave me the slot I wanted and assured me that my complaint would be passed to the techies. Not a lot of point giving access codes that don't work or is it deliberate, to cut down on the 2 hour slots?

Good to see my old mates and the Oakmount engine again yesterday. It's 35 years since I was there and it was still running a working weaving shed under steam then.

Finished Piketty yesterday and went for tea with the Kids at Earby where I got two books, Pytheas the Greek which Susan has had for yonks and Tony Benn's memoir, Dare to be a Daniel. So I'll be reading that and recovering!
