I still have my Nokia 3210 with an English sim card and I use it when I visit the UK. I inherited my daughters 12 years old Nokia C2 which is good enough for me and does everything I want it to do. I can put up with the laughter and comments about it being a museum piece when I use it in China. One day I'll upgrade to a tablet but watching people at lunch playing with their germ ridden tablets somehow puts me off. Nokias are wonderful phones.

Well done Stephen and Ian, for helping out at a crucial time.

You're right, despite my misgivings this is an advance particularly because I am in a closed group where four of us can talk about nasty things we don't want to load the kids with. They tell me it's absolutely secure and it's just the ticket....
I am so grateful to all of you.....
China, Doc gave me the old Nokia. 17 years old now but still a good machine.....

Going on about Smartphones.. I've always been used to refreshing my phone every 3-6 months. When I left the last gig I got myself a Nexus 5X which does everything I need it to. Work gave me a EE Rook the other week, its £20, Android and you could do a lot worse! Couldnt believe the value really.

I've just mailed Pluggy because I put the phone on charge last night as it instructed me to do so and this morning it is dead. I have done the engineer's solution, taken the battery out and cleaned the contacts but no joy. If anyone has any suggestions fire away I have to get back on Whatsapp as soon as possible as that's my main point of contact with the Janet project.....

Help!!!!!!!!!
Later.....
A good woman told me about the Apple trick, hold the on/off button down and press the start button but it hasn't worked on the Samsung.

Later, I have tried tips from web. No Joy. Clues.... The charger unit isn't warm even though it has been on all night. When plugged to the charger the phone is blank, I'd have expected it to show signs it was on charge. My engineer's instincts tell me that the problem is the charger, I think the next thing is to try the USB charger cable that Pluggy waved in front of me the other day.....

I know it sounds obvious but have you plugged the charger in the right port and not the earphone socket? On my Nokia the ports are almost the same.

Not a silly suggestion China. Yes I'm sure. Daughter Susan has responded, if I haven't resolved this by dinnertime I email her and she buys me a new phone this afternoon. As soon as Garlick's open I shall be round there to see if they have a USB charger cable. If not I know Pluggy has one. Then we can see if it is the charger that's at fault. Hopefully we can get that done before dinnertime.... If not I go ahead with the new phone..... Time is of the essence!
Later.... I have been reading the user guide on the web and am now convinced it is the charger because according to the guide, when charging an Icon comes up on the screen and I haven't seen this. This coupled with the fact that neither the charger or the phone gets warm seems to me to be proof.
What puzzles me is that Pluggy said he had fully charged it. I wonder if he used a different charger....?

What model is the phone, Stanley? Post a pic of the phone end of the charging cable and I'll have a look in the drawer. I have a Nokia 300 you're welcome to have. I'll post a picture.

Nokia 300. It's yours Stanley if it's of use. It was on an EE pay as you go contract.

It's currently charging, it works with the keypad as well as some functionality via touchscreen, P was using it to surf the net and use the Facebook app. I'm unsure if it's locked to EE (Orange) though but worth a try.

Phone needs to be Android, IOS or Blackberry to support Whatsapp Kev.

It needs to be a smartphone to run WhatsApp. I tried ringing when I became aware but he's out at the moment. It would seem unlikely its dead since its served me solid for a couple of years without a moments problem. The Phone is question is a Samsumg Fame S6810P. It is fair to say I didn't charge it with that charger, I have a MicroUSB charger with multiple outlets on my desk thats always there and I pretty much always use that. I can let him have the charger off my new phone, Its still unused in the box. Not Samsung branded but it should work.

Thanks to all of you. I went round to Garlick's as soon as they opened and poured out my woes. Sam tested the charger and it is bum. I've got the USB cable off him that charges from the FM3 we tried it in the shop and it works. The phone is connected to the FM3 at the moment and charging. Pluggy has just rung me and is popping round with the new charger. He was apologising to me but I told him, these things happen! He's a good man.
The final test is whether I am back online later when it has charged up a bit. If there is any problem I'll activate Susan's offer and get a new phone this afternoon.....

Stanley, you can run it while still connected via the USB or charger. They charge quicker when switched off though. If you are giving it a bit of hammer you will have to get into a regular charging routine. Batteries are getting better but it is one of the small annoyances of having a multi function device. I should add that the modern LION batteries are very forgiving and are designed to put up with abusive charging regimes, you don't necessarily have to wait while they are fully discharged before giving a top up charge.

No worries, I didn't read the spec on the Nokia I just had a recollection of P using it for FB, she must have been doing so via the browser.

Thanks Ian, It's running Whatsapp now as it sits on the draining board charging. We had one final alarum.... I couldn't get it to scan the QR code on the screen, rang Pluggy and he hotfooted it round here again just as I had tried again with the phone released from its case. Don't know how that made a difference but it did. I hope I can let the poor bugger have a rest.... People are wonedrful.... Thanks Pluggy.

Just something to be aware of re charging from a USB socket, the USB from one of my laptops was only putting out around 400ma, with the WiFi switched on I was using poser faster than it was charging

Good point Kev, some USB are a bit lacking so to say. You can get a USB charging plug for about a quid if push comes to shove. I installed a dual gang mains socket with twin charging ports in the kitchen which works very well. Cases, I'm not a particular fan, with the advent of gorilla glass no need really, sometimes the holes are not quite in the right place, so many phones, so many cases, saves knocks I suppose.

I think the camera can see through the case if the phone is positioned right Stanley, I didn't have any problems in that area, but I'll be the first to admit the case phone clip arrangement is cracked and the whole case is shabby at best. As Panbiker says, they are fairly tough without a case, but they do preserve them from scuffs etc.

Stanley has a working charger now (the new one from my new phone). Whats passed between posts explains talk about the case. A little difficulty linking whatsapp back to the browser and phone case obscuring the camera .

It asked for the camera activation from the screen again when I logged back in after my sleep. Same problem until I pressed the start button. I have bookmarked the logged in page, hope that cures it..... I've spent £2.50 on a new case in case that cures it.
Later, has anyone any suggestions how to send images on Whatsapp ? I've looked in FAQs but they only mention pics stored on the phone....

Bit of a glitch yesterday. Susan and Mick got me a memory card for the phone so I can save photos. It's the right 32Gb card and the case to put it in so the computer can read it like a normal flash card. I popped it in and later when I charged the phone it went dead on me. I got it going by holding both buttons down until it rebooted. I've taken the card out now and rebooted it again this morning and it is functioning OK. I think I need a Pluggy visit if he's passing to sort me out. Another thing that's puzzling me is that the way Pluggy left me set up, when I brought Whatsapp up on the screen I was connected. Now I have to go through the faff of reading the QR code every time. I'm sure it's me, but I need a bit of help...... I am connected and reading and sending OK this morning so there is no rush.....

Things are looking up. Pluggy called in and installed the 32gb card in the phone successfully. Garry TV on Rainhall Road has rung, he has caught James and he comes at 2pm tomorrow.
Question about the card, will it automatically store pics?
