Yes but there's backlogs and backlogs. Yvette Cooper is talking about the overall backlog of people waiting to be processed. I think Braverman is talking about new arrivals registering a claim. Weasel words round statistics.
One of Rishi Sunak's pledges is to get NHS waiting lists down. As pointed out by many pundits the length of the waiting list is irrelevant what matters is how long people are on this list. Taking hypothetical figures. The waiting LIST could be 50,000 with a waiting Time of one year. If the list went down to 25,000 but the time went up to two years not many people would be very pleased.
Politicians choose their words very carefully often to create a good impression when the reverse is true.

Agreed Ken. The profession of 'weasel words advisor' was never as important as it is now.
Have a look at
THIS. I think Sir John is right, he says that Johnson's political career is ended mainly because the public no longer believe him. One wonders why it took so long!

A chap phoned in last night to LBC- I didn't sleep too well as it was warm. He said he had lost his job due to the Covid epidemic, got no furlough pay, and lost his job. He went from £350 per week to £178 per fortnight in benefits. He had inevitably lost his house, and was now sleeping in his car and had been for some time. "It was like an oven last night"
Of course there is no means of knowing if it was all true, and there was probably more to it, but he sounded convincing.
Couldn't help comparing his position with that of the 'asylum seekers' who are accomodated in a hotel with free food, and no council tax or energy bills, plus a bit of spending money. I guess he'd take a cabin in one of the Floatels if offered.

A good argument for 'reverse income tax' David which I believe the LibDems still advocate.
Our biggest problem may not turn out to be Ukraine but the state of Russia Peter, this is more evidence that all is not well.

This type of theft was in the news months ago but seems to have been taken up again by the BBC. It looks like a circular scam where the thief steals your car parts and then sells them on the web to other folk who are victims of the same type of theft. However another aspect is shown by the parts they are stealing - the way manufacturers build their cars now means there are very expensive things in the front under the bonnet now - not just what was there in the past but now cameras, sensors, fancy expensive lights etc.

I've just deleted an amusing post with an anecdote - having realised that Digbeth is in Birmingham and not Liverpool, where this sort of thing would not make the BBC.

Peter.... Your post brought to mind a mental image of the engine compartment of a Ford 8 van. Nothing but a side valve engine and a radiator...... Those were the days!
David, I too thought Digbeth was in Liverpool. Strange. Do tell the anecdote anyway.... we need amusing.

THIS BBC business news. It would appear it's official, Jeremy Hunt says there is no alternative to interest rate rises.
The UK has "no alternative" but to hike interest rates in a bid to tackle rising prices, the chancellor has said. Jeremy Hunt said inflation - the rate at which prices rise - was the "number one challenge we face". He said the government would be "unstinting in our support" for the Bank of England "to do what it takes" to slow inflation. Rising interest rates and mortgage costs weighed on UK economic growth in April. While the economy grew by 0.2%, the Office for National Statistics said that housebuilders and estate agents had a "poor month".
I was expecting him to be lauding the .2% increase in GDP but evidently he has realised how silly that would be and has decided to disarm some of the criticism which is to come as more interest rate rises bite into the economy.

I learned of the existence of this organisation
today, after viewing Simon Webb on Youtube.
National Inter Agency Liaison Officers
Said to have been in existence for many years . Simon has asked for any pictures of these people published before yesterday.
I think lots of questions can be imagined after that photo. What is their function in such a situation? How exactly do they share intelligence wth the other responders on the scene, and why are there so many? I appreciate that is easy to be wise after the event, and the situation could have gone in many different, more serious, directions.
As in the dispensing of presciptions - my view is that the more people inolved in a process- the more there is scope for chaos.
It all looks a bit sinister to me though - convince me otherwise.

NILO's
The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service was the next to introduce the role in 2005
If they were supposed to be doing something at the 2017 arena bombing in Manchester it didn't work!
Most agencies were held back for hours rather than getting in there and doing something for the survivors, bloody disgrace.

Go to this latest episode of Radio 4's `Americast' , scroll through to about halfway and listen to them discussing Trump's trial with Miles Taylor, former chief of staff at the US Department of Homeland Security. Taylor had the unenviable task of being in charge of security for Trump during his presidency. He believes Trump wanted to keep the documents, not to sell or to pass on but to give him a hold over people and organisations. He also describes that when later he moved against Trump he ended up having to have himself and his family moved to a `safe house' because they were being targeted by Trump supporters threatening to kill them. And this is the man who was chief of the US Department of Homeland Security.

Tell that to the families who's kids and other family members died waiting for timely medical attention. The enquiry revealed quite few victims that would have survived if the emergency services had got their act together.

I think we are actually in agreement here?
With my flippant hat on - 'if only there had been an organisation of National Interagency Liaison Officers to organise things.
Or being more sensible - better to demonise the perpetrator - he alone caused it all - and not the emergency services. There have been occasions where there were two devices - one to attract them, and then a follow up to kill them. No one at the time knew what was going to come next.
They were perhaps wise to wait? I have not read the report. It's easy to be wise after the event.

I thought at the time I wouldn't have liked to have to make the decision. Imagine the fall-out if the emergency services had taken a chance and gone in and there had been a second explosion to catch them, something that isn't unheard of. Easy to be wise after the event.
(My mind goes back to how we dealt with hang-fire ammunition on the 17pdrs. It was mandatory to leave them alone for I think it was twenty minutes after which a misfire could be deemed safe to remove from the breech. We would never have dreamt of 'taking a chance'.)

I thought this might be a spoof at first
Boris' column in The Daily Mail. If I can see it free of charge - how do they make any money?
Still not sure.
I'd be amazed if there wasn't a consideration in it for him from the makers of the slimming drug. Can't wait for the digital currency plug.

Diet Drops, whatever next, apparently you can also achieve magnificent weight loss with chomping a single "Gummy Bear" everyday. Mind you, if that was all you had everyday it's bound to work eventually.

I think perhaps some wires are crossed here. The
Gummy Bears diet is quite different from the use of the hormone drug called
semaglutide. I don't think I'd want to try either.
I am in little doubt that Boris or the Mail, is being paid to promote the latter by the Pharmceutical industry.

I agree with you David. As I have been heard to say before I deeply mistrust any miracle medication that helps weight loss. The idea of injecting yourself in the stomach each day seems to me to be a policy of desperation! And yes, almost certain some kick back from Big Pharma to either Johnson or the Daily Mail.
See
THIS report that Sunak loses another MP.
A Conservative MP who was suspended following allegations of sexual misconduct has resigned. David Warburton, who represents Somerton and Frome in Somerset, is the fourth Tory MP in eight days to announce their resignation. Mr Warburton said the past 14 months since allegations were published in a national newspaper had been "extraordinarily difficult". He added that the allegations about him had been "malicious". The MP had been accused of taking drugs and making unwanted advances towards two women, after they and another woman spoke to the Sunday Times about his conduct. That led to his suspension from the Conservative Party in April last year. He announced his resignation in an interview with the Mail On Sunday in which the paper reports him as admitting to taking cocaine after drinking "incredibly potent" Japanese whisky. He added in the interview: "I was set up, but I have been naive and incredibly stupid." He went on to deny the harassment claims he is accused of.
Sounds as though the Party will be well rid of him but this doesn't do Sunak any good.

THISpiece by Laura Kuenssberg, I think she is close to the truth here and it may be that Johnson is running out of track. The Times cartoon I posted this morning runs on the same lines.

I didn't take enough notice to find out that you had to eat a bag full everyday.

I suppose you would get the same result with Pomfret Cakes.
