Barlick's Stream and Steam project gives more examples of recent conservation successes, with several small schemes making a cumulative impact helping retain our town's character and preserving buildings for future generations. What is now the Spa on Walmsgate, Ribblesdale Buildings on Gisburn Road and the Cornmill come to mind. Much of this investment has come from private pockets as well as the public purse.

When the county council closed Rainhall Road primary school a dozen years ago, the first thing they asked was 'could they knock it down?'. Nowadays, the building houses about a dozen businesses as well as the performance and entertainment space.

Closing Rainhall school was always wrong and I knew that if they demolished it we would get another eyesore in our relatively unspoilt town. Progress is fine but not if the end result is damaging. If and when you look for targets for improvement remember Poor Bones, the Town Well in the wall at Gisburn Road school and Ouzledale Clough.

I wonder what will become of the old Church School when they move ?. If they'd have kept Rainhall road open, it would probably cope with the increasing population and could have stayed put.
But I'm just an old Luddite....

I had the same thought Pluggy. I also said that we would need the spaces in Rainhall Road school. Birth rate trends are not rocket science!
What a nice day we had compared to other parts of the country.

I've been pressing for the existing Church School site to become an area of open space. This is the most densely built up area in Barlick. Unless you county the play area at Letcliffe, there's no specific area for kids to go between Manchester Road and Kelbrook Road. Over the years, we've worked to have a play area accessible for children in each part of the town; this could be a possibility for this area.

Ideally, it would have been a condition of the planning permission for the new school that open space be created on the York Street site, but the decision takers wouldn't listen. We're trying to get the county council to hand over the cleared site for use as open space FOC, but there's a lot of obstacles in the way. As it stands, I think the odds are that the church authorities will get to to sell the site off for housing...

The existing school has probably got the worst conditions in the area and it's a good thing that it's being replaced.

As for keeping Rainhall primary school... couldn't agree more.

Re Ashes. You're assuming we all support England....
What grabbed me was a video of my one year old great grandson standing up, grasping the edge of the work surface in the kitchen and trying to get at the cookies! He's a big lad and almost walking!
How utterly foul decaffeinated tea is! Due to bad eyesight I inadvertently bought a large packet of them. Tried using them, two bags to each pot of tea but this morning I bit the bullet and threw them in the trash. I hate wasting food but they were truly terrible! Back on leaded tea....

An Australian 20 (cent?) coin, roughly the size of a two bob bit.

Found amongst the donations in the box at the cinema last night.

It's entirely up to cinemagoers whether they make a donation to running the cinema; I'm always a bit baffled when folk put something other than sterling in!

Probably placed in there as a joke because WE WON the Ashes! Also the Rugby League World Cup!
Mind you, they were pretty mean, and could have coughed up something worthy of being considered a donation.

We always stuff any spare cash ( pounds/ euros) we have into donation boxes before coming home...

My dad recently bought a pack of what he thought were chocolate chip cookies but when he offered us one it turned out to be a baking mix for making the cookies. He saw the nice picture on the pack and it hadn't occurred to him that it didn't feel like cookies. Mrs Tiz took it home, baked it and gave him the result!

No2 son was in the recording studio on Sunday with local (Barlick) band Dark Horse. An excellent cover of Eleanor Rigby and an original composition, by my son. You can have a listen here https://soundcloud.com/snakko/sets/dark-horse-05-01-14

My mate Roger in MN woke yesterday to -28C with wind chill taking it down to -50C. Don't complain about the weather! (A friend in St Louis tells me the cold weather has reached them but not as severe as MN.)
Nice to have something to look forward to... Readers get closer!

Pendle Hill had its fair share of UXB's as it was a WW2 mortar practice range.
