Well spotted David. I was wearing old El Cheapo trainers because I had to go in some heavy contamination and wanted to throw them away afterwards. I'm still wearing the Regent Brogues, you can't beat a good pair of boots and giving them TLC. I think they cost £14 when I bought them....

Here's what Peter was doing. He used to use a Box Brownie to take pics of his work for reports but asked me one day why all of a sudden they were out of focus. I had a look, the lens had dropped out! I had an old Praktika with a 50mm lens and gave it to him. He used it for all his pics after that. I loved that man.... and his work. Young Tom is no slouch either, apart from his nose he was a handsome lad in October 1985.....

I don't know where I got this image but it's certainly an interesting pic. Donaldson's, steeplejacks, Salford. Around 1900?

Classic sign of chimney bands under pressure because of corrosion building up behind the bands. This was taken in 1987 at Queen Street Harle Syke after the stack had been expertly refurbished. Not impressed!

Sweeping the chimney at Hey Farm in 1977. I've lost count of the number of times people have asked me how factory chimneys were swept!

You always get a good view from the top of a stack but this one from Masson Chimney in 1992 when Brooke Edgeley were doing a complete refurb must be one of the best there is. Just to the left of the head race to the turbines you can see a square structure. This is the strong room Tootals (Who Owned Sir William Arkwright Ltd) built to keep all their records safe during WW2.
