I read a quote from a letter written by a naval commander to his son, a naval captain, giving him advice on his impending first journey to the West Indies. No date was given but I assume it was in the 1800s. The last line was:
"Remember to line your hat with white paper"
I suppose they didn't have aluminium foil then!
