Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I thought it was a photo of the 21st century answer to the village stocks...a policeman telling off a burglar in front of the news media!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
After many years of hardly making a northerly journey I find that (hopefully) I shall be in the area again in mid February; my paternal grandma makes a century and a small party is hoped for. All things being equal, we may have 4 generations together in one room again for the first time in too many years.
I am staying on and hoping to get to Wheatley Lane Cemetery for a couple of photographs I have been meaning to retake since I lost the info on my old computer.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
129 people admitted to hospital thus far today with heat stress related problems...and we haven't reached the hottest part of the day yet...
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I heard that too Marilyn. Only 41 in Melbourne today and the temp has now dropped to 39 so its finally on the way down.Marilyn wrote:Adelaide is officially "THE HOTTEST CITY ON EARTH" today! ( 46+C degrees)

I just took our little old dog, who's 15 1/2 years old, out to the toilet. When she got to the concrete driveway she couldn't walk fast enough to stop her feet burning. she just stood in one spot lifting each foot in turn until I raced over and picked her up. One more day of this rotten heat to go before a cool change.

Oh the poor little dog.
I've been worried about my sons dog today...he is working...so no air-conditioning for her today. She has lots of options as far as finding the coolest spot to lay, as she now has the luxury of a doggy door...but still...it is cruel for any living thing today. The thought of driving half hour each way to check on her was just beyond me though.

Having moved on in the book from the end of WW2, I was fortunate to discover the story of a German who had been a Prisoner of War at the "Corner Café" better known as the Coronation Hotel near Horton. He as a 17 year old had been conscripted in January 1945 although he was physically unfit, short sighted. He was captured in March 1945 without ever having fire a shot and arrived at Horton soon after. What he has to say about his treatment here, and in particular the kindness shown by the people of Barlick has earned his story a place in the book. There is a bonus as well, a pic of the Corner Café in 1946 and another of him with his friend at the front of the main building.

Just back from getting the weekly veg shopping.
Hot as Hades out there. Will just lay on the couch until I recover....
42 C before a thunderstorm later this afternoon. Won't cool us down by much, but anything is a bonus.

Liz, try using "Unread Posts" once you have been through the list once subsequent visits make it a lot easier to see the wood from the trees.

A report that the Scottish police found the body of the young boy who vanished on Wednesday around midnight last night. The massive search has been called off and the tragedy is that the mother has been detained in connection with the death.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
An interesting conversation with Npower. 6 months ago they refunded a fairly reasonable sum from my energy account (gas and electric), last week they informed me they were increasing my direct debits by £50 a month. I have paid the same amounts for the past 3 years and always end up receiving a refund, since the beginning of December last year I am now also on a "fixed price" tariff.
Now, back to the telephone conversation; I called to tell them to leave my payments alone and to put them back where they were. The operative explained that the "automated system" could only calculate estimated usage 6 months in advance and, as my account was at a zero balance, I would be in debit by the end of the 6 month period. He then manually calculated my usage over 12 months and was suprised to find that I would be in credit by December (now there's a thing). He tried to reduce the payments back to where they were but "the system" would only allow a £35 reduction, not the £50 they had increased them by. I wonder how many people just allow the energy companies to set their payments levels? It's just a con, they can earn interest on your money...
I have considered just paying a quarterly bill but need to check further into the tariff for direct debit payments against the quarterly bill, another con...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Kev, they are weird aren't they. The only consolation we have is that if we have a normal bank account with a low balance we aren't getting any interest so the money is probably just as safe with the energy company as the bank! Bottom line is that I can't be arsed to argue with them. Wrong attitude I know but I'm old and tired and fed up with all their nonsense. That's why I recently refused the Warm Homes Discount, I get fed up with the intrusion of means testing.....

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Kev, don't forget that Npower is the company that several years ago gave it's customers a set rate for a year but quietly inserted a clause in the long-winded Terms and Conditions defining a year as 10 months.

I've been looking through my photos to find some from previous years taken from Bank Edge. Haven't found what I'm looking for yet, but did come across this from 6.50am July 2011.

Nice one David. Roll on the long days and fine weather I say!
I am thinking about the frustration that women in Parliament will experience this morning as they watch Lord Rennard steam-rollering his way back into the Liberal Group in the Lords. It's an indictment of the system that he can get away with such behaviour and I sympathise with them.
Easter is here early this year. Malteaser have brought out an Easter bunny made of chocolate, the 'Malteaster'. Have they no shame?

Watching "The Dales" with Ade Edmondson.
Have really enjoyed that series. If only I could put into words how the sight of those lovely dry stone walls, green pastures, black faced sheep and mud puddled roads stir me.
Sigh...simply awesome!
