I was chatting with the LCC peeps who were still working on Skipton Road after 10pm last night. Very cheery in spite of the weather

I had left it until then, for the wind to die down, before taking Merlin for a walk.

The fact that it's Stanley's birthday tomorrow, and he hasn't issued the usual reminder.

Let me be the first to wish him happy returns. perhaps that's why he cut his hair recently. Do kids still pull their friends' hair on birthdays, or has that tradition died out?

..and I'll join in the chorus: Happy Birthday Stanley.

(None of ours have pulled hair at birthdays; I'd forgotten all about the tradition.)

Thanks again to you all. When I look back at the dangers I have survived and all the broken bones I am forced to wonder how the hell I got this far! Perhaps my Dad was right when he said that there is a providence that looks after drunken men and idiots!

Two things grabbed me yesterday. First was a young presenter on the sea front somewhere talking about the power of the sea breaking 'huge blocks of masonry'. To illustrate this he picked up half a broken breeze block from the 'sea wall' in question. Breeze blocks can make a strong wall if they are bedded properly in a concrete foundation, re-bar inserted in the apertures and concrete poured in to make the wall monolithic. These blocks had none of this and so the 'massive wall' was about as much good as a chocolate teapot!
Second thing was the sink holes that are opening up due to underground erosion. Much was made about these 'mysterious' holes but nobody made the obvious connection which is that everyone has been commenting on the surface effects of flooding and water penetration but as the floods subside there are going to be serious after effects of the high water tables and increased underground flows. Think of all the structures that have been undermined, think of all the silt and debris washed down into the foul water system. We can expect much more damage than what is immediately obvious on the surface and this will not appear until after the waters have receded.

I've just noticed the press release issued by Pendle Council below.

Signs have gone up outside six Pendle cemeteries to highlight the presence of war graves there.

In this 100th anniversary year of the First World War, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) has created signs to be displayed outside cemeteries containing war graves.

War graves are the graves of ex-service personnel who died in active service.

In Pendle there is a total of 145 such graves in six of our cemeteries.

The signs – which simply say ‘At this location there are Commonwealth War Graves’ - have gone up at the entrances to these Council-owned cemeteries:

Barrowford
Colne
Earby
Ghyll
Nelson
Salterforth.
His Worship the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Smith Benson, has a personal interest in British history, particularly around the time of the two World Wars.

The Mayor said:

“These war graves are being highlighted as a mark of respect to the fallen soldiers who lie within.

“The signs that have been put up outside the six Pendle cemeteries are a lasting tribute to their bravery.”

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has installed the signs at no expense to Pendle Council. The CWGC is responsible for maintenance of the signs.

Have you seen the Russian ladies curling team at the Sochi Olympics? The days of Tamara and Irina Press are long gone. I do hope they get further in the competition.
I don't understand much about the game - seems a bit like crown green bowls , played on ice with polished boulders, with a red circle instead of a jack. Good to watch though.

In respect of CWGC, it would be interesting to know if Private Wilfred Anker who is in an unmarked plot in Ghyll Cemetery has got his CWGC headstone yet, supposed to have been done in 2013.

Not there when I did my remembrance cross distribution Peter, that was early November. I keep an eye open every time I go down to visit Mum and Dad and our Dan. Christmas last time I checked.

How nice it is to go for a walk somewhere different but very close to home. Trying to keep our feet dry this morning we drove round to Kelbrook, walked up Cob Lane then down the bridleway towards Accornlea (a bit muddy in places) then back through Hague & Stonetrough to Kelbrook. About 3.5 miles of lovely countryside. Why on earth can't you walk down Teddy Carr Lane??

It runs in a straight line from Accornlea to the shooting lodge on Kelbrook Moor. It was built by Teddy Carr as a private road and remains private...there are a lot of signs making that very clear!

It looks like the landowner doesn't want it to become a public right of way.

If a route is used unchallenged for 20 years or more, it becomes a public right of way.

Sometimes, landowners allow permissive paths across their land. From the sound of it, this is unlikely to happen in this case.

I know David, it's just a bit frustrating to see a straight and dry track heading in exactly the right direction and you can't stride out down it! Having struggled through the mud on the bridleway, which looks like the original old lane, I can see why Mr Carr built his own lovely drive to transport his guests to the moor!
I remembered this morning that it is Teddy Carr Drive, not Lane.

The continuation of that old lane, past the Gun Club and eventually coming out onto Skipton Old Road near to Hainslack, is about to be upgraded to a bridleway.
