Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Some of you may remember that my mother was a native of Dukinfield. That's why I was intrigued today to find that the American actor W C Fields was actually called William Claude Dukenfield. He was born in the US but it looks as though his family had roots in Dukinfield.

I hope it looks as good as that when my daughter visits.

A bit over the top but the hanging baskets are certainly a credit to Barlick in Bloom (If that is who is responsible!)

A horse that ran at Royal Ascot today, was called 'Mayo Neighs'.

His Majesty the King has had a winner at Royal Ascot. Desert Hero wins at 18/1 . Hope he had a few bob on. He looks pleased.
Good order is restored to the world.
Put aside all bad news - forget your mortgage for a while and rejoice. . . .
PS The cup is tiny - I've seen better at the bowls club. The prize money is poor for this level. Everything is relative.
The jockey is Tom Marquand. I had a conversation with him a few years ago. He's a good man.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I came across this today. Le Mans Disaster 1955
I had little interest then in motor sport (and have even less now) but I was vaguely aware - since the family next door went to the event. I hadn't any idea of the scale of it all. More than 80 dead, and over a hundred injured - There are graphic videos of the accident on Youtube - yet the race was not stopped !! Incredible.
Le Mans
Names fvrom the past - Juan Fangio, Mike Hawthorne, Stirling Moss.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Juan Manuel Fangio was one of my boyhood heroes. I was in Berlin when the Le Mans accident happened. I remember the German papers were full of it and even AFN reported on it.

I remember in the 1980s going to see a B&W film all about Fangio. I think it was at the National Film Theatre. Superb photography and even more special for us when we were in our Italian car phase! He was racing saloon cars as well as single seaters.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I note that Dr John Campbell has not posted for 12 days now. That's unusual.
He says -
"Sorry for the recent radio silence, I have been in a low internet area. Thank you so much to everyone who expressed concern about my absence, this has been so kind of so many. God willing, back very soon, John".
Unclear how God determines his internet signal. Let's hope all is well.

Take a trip up to Blackburn Royal Hospital the internet signal is abysmal. Too high up for normal transmission. A case of Nearer my God to thee.

He's back today, and looks OK. That's a relief.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
I've long been puzzled by the use of [square brackets] in text. I finally looked it up yesterday - and find they are used when something is added to a quote which was not in the original.
Aah now I see. I expect everyone else knew that; but just in case . . . .
PS While I was looking things up - I checked on the difference between baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, and washing soda. . Still struggling to get the tea stains off my mugs though.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Bleach will work a treat, steep in diluted state and rinse well, good as new guaranteed.

Ian is right, bleach in hot water is instantaneous.

I've tried that in he past with no success -and despite Einstein's advice about doing the same thing again and expecting a different result - I did it again. Guess what - same result.
Can hard water be anything to do with it? I wouldn't have thought so.

My mum used to use her denture cleaning tablets for stained mugs.
Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Tea stains have only ever come out of my mug in the dishwasher. No amount of handwashing, soaking, scouring has done it for me.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Neither would I, put more bleach in, you must have some strong tea. Never failed me.
Dishwasher also works probably because the tabs are caustic. With the other milder compounds, like baking soda you need something to set off a reaction like vinegar. I find that mixture works better on enamel and cooker rings and the like.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
Don't understand bleach not working. Do as Ian says and use more! It must be something to do with the water.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
You might be on to something with the hard water, you could have a fine layer of limescale build up. Although bleach should remove any discoloration it won't actually remove limescale.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
That sounds like a plausible explanation. You aren't inventing the wheel. There will be a combined bleach and limescale remover on sale locally.

Re: 'Owt else or Any Other Business
We've got an old bottle of Steradent powder kept for using on stained mugs. A web page gives the composition as:
Steradent Active Plus
Ingredients
Sodium Bicarbonate, Potassium Caroate, Citric Acid, Sodium Carbonate Peroxide, Sodium
Sulphate, Sodium Carbonate, PEG-150, Malic Acid, Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulphonate, PEG-90, Aroma,
TAED, CI 28440, CI 42090
Potassium caroate is a mixture of potassium monopersulphate, potassium sulphate, and potassium bisulphate.
