Richard Nelson; the clerk to Barnoldswick Town Council for five years up to 2013.

Richard resigned on health grounds last year after a lengthy period of ill health. He was subsequently diagnosed with cancer of the spine and became paralysed.

In past years, Richard was a Pendle councillor for Barrowford and, in recent years, a parish councillor for the area.

Richard was passionate about allotment gardening, growing some magnificent produce. His gardening expertise provided excellent advice when the town council discussed planting projects.

Am I confused, I had thought that Ernest Borgnine died a while ago. I have checked the internet and there are a few reports saying he died in July 2012. ??

Maybe of little interest to others, but Jack Clay's obit was in the Raving 'Erald the other day. Thinking of my days at the timber yard reminded me. I worked for Jack for over 20 years. Sadly, his mind went at a relatively young age and he'd been living in a care home for probably 15 years or more. Jack built half of Addingham as it is today, starting out by demolishing the railway structures.

Walter Brunner with the preserved engine he looked after in Germany. I had mail from his daughter this morning that Walter is dead. He was a contributor to Shed Matters. A fine engineer who did meticulous work.

Jack Heald

I'll always remember Jack with affection. When I began as a councillor in 1979, Jack was the West Craven reporter for the Craven Herald when West Craven got two pages of the Herald's broadsheet printed in a tiny font. The pages were filled week in week out with detailed reports. Jack would sit in a meeting with little discernible scribbling, sometimes with his eyes apparently closed, and yet there would be a verbatim report of proceedings in Friday's Herald.

In 1981, I bearded the lion in his den at Sough whilst campaigning before the county council elections. A piece of his advice, which I follow still, was to fix on a goal and achieve something tangible to look back on from my time as a councillor. I'll be forever grateful for Jack's advice, and for (some of) his criticism.

Jack went on to be the editor of the Herald and an inspiration for generations of local journalists, probably in awe of the idiosyncratic character. There have never been many people like Jack in local journalism and it's not likely that there'll ever be any more. 'Legendary' is absolutely an appropriate epithet for Jack.

Jack was a hugely influential figure in local affairs, a great man from an era now sadly passed away.
