Gloria for some reason my reply about the wrong pic got moved in the sequence. I'll leave it to Maz to comment on the answers, it's her object.

From the number of tabs it looks like it has 12 sections so could be divided into months and represent one year.

I suspect its a 'Machinery's Handbook'. the bible for engineers. Far too expensive for mere mortals like me who made do with a 'Fowlers' Machinists' at 6/- in 1960.

That's right, the 1956 edition so it has all the old standards in it. They are quite cheap second hand and as they are American are all Imperial Units and Whitworth! (LINK) Here's a 1976 edition for £11.35, well worth it....
In a similar vein but much older, can anyone remember us discussing this on the old site?

I've got one that looks similar but is about half that size, and its a prayer book. It belonged to someone born in 1922.

Well! I am surprised that nobody has remembered the long discussions we had about Molesworth. The vest pocket sized book is one of a series that were written by Sir Guilford Lindsey Molesworth. See this LINKfor a Wiki article about him. They were intended to be carried in the vest pocket of colonial engineers and gave information about everything from erecting telegraph lines to the evaporation rates of bodies of water in summer in different parts of India. Very rare these days, if you see one grab it!

The Molesworth discussions were probably on the old site and have therefore been deleted from our memories!
