Hoping for rather more inventive answers... it could have been open cast treacle mining... however, Kev in on the button; the new gas pipe was threaded through the old metal main on Friday and new services connected to houses.

Looks like it's hinged at one end and snaps shut...is it part of Thora Hird's suspender belt?

Nobody will be racking their brains over this one because of Xmas. It's a very early version of the peephole in the door that you see today.

It's a hard one I know but let's push it a bit further. Look at the construction and the way it is funnelling down to a smaller aperture behind the boarding and note the cast iron arched girder supporting the arch....
