Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
David is closest and I'll come clean because it is so difficult. It's the tapping hole at the base of a charcoal fired iron furnace at Nibthwaite in the Lake District.

Is it the secondary school on the road that heads to Bradford?
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Close but no cigar! It is the Onward Building at the current college site. The painters were too enthusiast when burning the paint off the exterior. I happened to be there with David Moore in his office when the caretaker came in and told David the college was on fire. Many tales ensued.... Perhaps the most memorable was when the Vice Principal sent the firemen into the building in full smoke protection gear to get the filing cabinets out which contained the lecturer's notes. He explained that if they weren't rescued they would never teach again!

The far one seems to designed to fit on top of the near one but I have no idea what it's for.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
It's a pair of the base plates they put under structures that need to be able to rock, either in the wind or in earthquake conditions. The one shown at the bottom sits on the foundations and the other sits on top of that and is connected to the bottom end of a vertical member of eg. a bridge support or some kind of pylon. The vertical member can then rock freely on the bottom plate without breaking.

Ooo, you smooth talker P! Are you inferring something about my driving?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Sorry David, I didn't mean to imply that any Barlicker was a bad drive. Although looking at the Google Street maps some how the driver got a little off course. Try it yourself. Decisions (The old Railway Hotel) he gets right inside!!

In spite of heavy hints, no one is near the intended purpose...

It's a sanding block (well, at least that's what I've been using it as).

mmmmm...looks a bit awkward...
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Damn, and we thought we'd beaten the Germans in `45. Now they've got us even using their sanding blocks!
