Today I shall be Mainly...
Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I've had mine tested once a year sine 2004. I'm also part of the Retinal Screening Programme. I've never had to pay.

I was quite surprised too Sue. Funny how the news of £100 fines without the option affected me.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Awful cold, wet weather predicted for here in Somerset, Eileen, and we're supposed to be going to a Jubilee lunch and evening in a farmer's barn. I think wellies will be the order of the day!
On eye tests...After turning 60 I had free annual eye tests from Specsavers, didn't ask for them, they just told me that's what I got, I didn't have any special needs and it just seemed to be related to turning 60. I've even had free tests in less than 12 months from them. I wonder if that was Specsavers own promotional arrangement? After all, a lot of people think they have to buy new specs every time they have their eyes tested and the company must make a lot of money out of it. It'll be interesting to see what they say next time. I don't see why I should pay a fine if a profit-making company tells me I can have free tests - it's up to them to sort out how they are covering the cost of the tests.

Wewent for a walk at Walshaw reservoirs, Widdop. It was alittle breezy but otherwise nice. The rhododendrons are just coming into flower. We were disappointed as that is why we chose to walk up there. Then lunch at the Queen Victoria in Burnley and a visit to the cemetery, then home. Its now 3.50pm and I have cuppa , whilst I contemplate completing knitting Eve's cardigan.

Tiz, from what Paul Lewis was saying the opticians were lax and just allowed people to sign the forms each year. As you say, it's a possible sale for them. However, it was the customer who got it in the neck. Nothing fair about it from what I can see.

Making sure I am well hydrated, filling in my medical questionnaire and donating blood at this afternoon's session at Rolls. I am hoping to see a good proportion of the 3200 Barlick people who are also eligible to donate, best get down early then!

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Same as yesterday. I have knocked out three Salterforth articles up to now and it's going well.
While I was checking my research for the articles I came across a reference to a graveyard being discovered when Kelbrook New Road was built in the inter-war years. This plus the fact that Dorothy Carthy says that there used to be a farm called Broadstones on the site where Slaters built Salterforth Mill in 1888 which was used at various times as a pub, a church and a chapel. It struck me that when the developers started digging the site they might find some surprises. I rang planning to see whether they were aware of the possibilities and got a slightly dusty answer. They said that residents had raised the same points and that the County Archaeologist had been informed but their research showed there was no truth in the graveyard story.... I got the feeling they weren't really interested.

Someone posted a topic asking about the graveyard on the old site. I will go and have a look for it.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
The planning department were quite short with me and told me it had been investigated and shown to be untrue.... But I can think of reasons why they would favour this interpretation.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
I couldn't find that topic on the old site I'm afraid.
Today I am meeting up with a lady from Ilkley who emailed Colne library with a query about her ancestors who lived at Shawhead (between Colne & Black Lane Ends). She thought they must have been at the farm called Shawhead, but in fact an area both sides of the road coming up the hill used to be known as Shawhead, right down towards Laneshawbridge on one side and up almost to the Black Lane Ends pub. We have discovered her family were at Knarrside, so we are going to have a bit of a history walk from the pub over Knarrs Hill, across to Jerusalem and back over Piked Edge. I hope the mist clears. This afternoon we are preparing the Earby Chronicles Summer edition for distribution down at the Community centre. A whole day of local history!

I shall be boring and write another Salterforth article, they are flowing well.....
Wonderful to see the varied activities of the members who respond. Just think how good it would be if there were more people actively participating in activities which are a benefit to local society... (Or am I just being smug?)

Eileen, I have almost run out of milk because the errant courier has kept me prisoner in the house for five days! I hope they deliver this morning.....
Salterforth articles finished. Next task is to gather Bancroft images together for a volunteer at the engine house who took the trouble to come and see me. I have offered them the pics before but never had any response. Sad.

I made my grandaughter, Eve a dress today, or strictly speaking a long cotton top. I also met up with some old friends for lunch in Delph. Tomorrow is an oils class all day, with yoga in the evening. Lunch out today, tomorrow, and Thursday... so much for the weight!
