From Orange yesterday afternoon

Thanks for your email regarding the speed of your broadband connection.

I can confirm that your line was migrated to BT's 21st Century Network
(WBC) on 01/10/2012 to allow you to benefit from faster broadband
speeds. Your line can now receive a top speed of 17 Meg on this network.

Your line is still within it's initial 10 days stabilisation period
since being migrated to this network, so please leave your router
switched on continuously for this period.

If you find that your speed is still slow after 10/10/2012, please call
our Technical Support Department for further help with this. You can
contact this department, free from your Orange landline, by calling our
helpline number listed below.

If you've any further queries then please don't hesitate to get in
contact with us again.

Kind Regards
Ann
Broadband Support

Same number I have Kev. I shall call them tomorrow as the five days is definitely up. Just checked, still 5mps. We shall simply have to keep nagging them!
I decided to do it today. I went through all the rigmarole again of being told it wasn't possible on a copper line. I think I have got through to them, the agent is checking with the engineers and says he will ring me back within two hours. I am not holding my breath.

Crisis last week - Spotify stopped producing any sound, and told me there was a problem with the sound card. All other sound applications were OK. Long story - much ignorant fiddling about. Eventually uninstalled Chrome browser, and replace it with Firefox. I think I told it to choose its own plugins during installation. Result all Spotify problems vanished. Now I've got Firefox working as I want it, I'm well pleased with it. (The Explorer I used was out of date, and kept hanging up.)

Tripps, welcome to Firefox, I wish you many happy hours of browsing! If, like me, you have a preference for using the keyboard instead of making all those mouse clicks have a look at the Firefox Keyboard Shortcuts web page shown here:
http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/key ... ks-quickly
For example, when you've got more than one tab (page) open, hold down the Alt key and press 1, or 2 etc to switch between tabs.

I have an update from Orange. After waiting six hours for the call bak promised in two hours I rang them again and am fairly confident I have found the magic key. The lad I spoke to assures me that it will happen withinn five days. When I told him this is what I was told six days ago he said that the problem was that the other agent had omitted to change my service from 'IPmax' to WBC. Ipmax only gives 8mps service and WBC gives 20mps so if you are having the same problem these are the magic words "Check to see if I am on WBC and not IPMax". I have a good feeling about this now..... Will report progress.

I've not got that far yet Kev but speed is up 20% at 6mps this morning. Looks as though the process has started at last. Glad you have got the full service back.

The 20MBs was a one off. Average over 3 tests give a download speed of around 14MBs. That'll do for me.

I have just had a call from a nice lady at Orange who says that she is personally attending to my migration to the 21CN BT equipment at the exchange. Funnily enough she says that I am still on IPMax but she will change this. The increase in speed I got this morning was due to them tweaking the old service evidently. At the very least I seem to have got their attention, they are calling me! Onward and upwards lads......

Just when I'd welcomed Tripps to the joys of using Firefox we are told of a vulnerability in the latest version, 16.0, which was released a couple of days ago. At least Mozilla have sorted it quickly and the replacement 16.1 version is available now to cure the problem.

Reading your post Tiz, I thought I would just check which version I was on. I clicked on Help and then About to see the current version. The info window was already downloading the latest updates. It then asked for a restart of Firefox to which I clicked OK. Updates applied and all tabs reloaded leaving me exactly where I was before in this thread but all updates applied.

Proper joined up software meethinks!

"the joys of using Firefox"

Short lived I'm afraid. I got in some trouble down;loading some free audio software. Escaped from its clutches by going back to last weeks settings, and lost the problems. Sadly Spotify has gone silent again. Luckily I have access with another computer. I'm otherwise happy with firefox, and seem to have tamed it, I think. I didn't realise you can't uninstall Internet explorer though.

News report on the BBC tonight regarding the 21cn broadband connection to remote islands up in Scotland. The locals have participated and invested in the scheme erecting their own masts and pylons when required. Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna as well as further flung areas can now get a broadband connection.

BBC News Highlands and Islands

I was just thinking how this puts Oranges efforts in Barlick to shame, they can't seem to get Stanley a decent connection and he only lives 200 yards from the exchange!

David, the only way to get rid of Explorer is to ditch Windows. Funnily enough I got an upgrade only yesterday which was a complete reload of Firefox. The only thing I can say is that clearing Msoft and all its works from my system was the end of all my annoying problems. Perhaps you should consider leaping into the void?
Ian, I saw that as well and as you know I have an interest in Eigg. You're right, Orange has not served its customers well and up to press haven't got me my upgrade to WBC which I found means 'Wholesale Broadband Connection' and is a product being marketed by BT. The sooner the better....... I am in the third day of the four to five day period they said it would take. Patience....

Did you see my comment further up? Orange stated that they switched my line on October 1st but I didn't see a change until October 9th. You may have a few more days to wait.
