Thought I'd put this on here, it's a link to a post in the Local History thread. Just in case it gets overlooked http://www.oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/view ... 569#p57569

The eye doctor saying she didn't need to see me for six weeks.
A new book on the history of invisible ink, 'Secrets, Lovers and Spies' by Makrakis. I've ordered it.....
An offer from my lovely daughters to pay for cleaners to come in and give me a good spring clean right through the house. Sounds good to me so I accepted gratefully and proposed to have them in once a month to do a top up. It will do me good and make my daughters happy because their standards of housekeeping are higher than mine. I don't do so badly but recognise that in their eyes I am deficient in some respects.....
Later, after our walk. Two nice old racing bikes in the window of what used to be The Occasion on Newtown/Albert Road. A Claude Butler and a Hobbs. Both on tubular tyres and with a fixed gear so they only have one brake on the front wheel. Better frames than my old Raleigh Clubman but that too had 531 tubing. It came with bog standard fittings and a Sturmey Archer gear but I soon upgraded it with Michelin racing tyres, a 5 speed dérailleur, Italian hubs and butted spokes. I never forgave mother and father for selling it while I was in the army.....

Several shops are due to be displaying classic bikes as part of the celebrations around the Tour de France beginning in our county.

David Beckham at Wimbledon - normal haircut, sports jacket, white shirt with a tie. The lad's finally grown up. He's sucking a sweet - no doubt a Werthers original. Shame about the tattoos though.

Ah - that explains it- probably a bit of extra subtle 'product placement' You do have to run quickly to keep up these days.

"Sharapova, 27, the world’s wealthiest female athlete, founded the sweet firm in 2012 with her own money and considered temporarily changing her surname to Sugarpova during the US Open last year to promote the “premium candy line”.

Unusually for me I watched part of the Costa Rica v Greece match. I see CR won 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Hard luck on Greece, they looked the best team to me....

I've warmed to Costa Rica over the last few days. I realised I hadn't a clue where it was, so looked it up. It's between Nicaragua and Panama, and seems to be a nice place. Surprised it's not more of a tourist destination. Reasonable standard of living and good social services for the region. Main point in favour - they have totally disbanded their army. Risky in that area I'd have thought. Perhaps there's a lesson there?

That story reminds me of one I was told many years ago by a Bobby. He and a woman colleague pulled someone out of the canal at Coates and as the woman PC was administering CPR the man bit her so she threw him back in. I don't know whether this is true or not but I like it!
I wondered what the work was on the end of the public toilets in the Pioneer car park. All became clear over the weekend. Very modern, I've never seen one before!

I'm not sure if the defibrillator casing has a defibrillator in it yet... It hadn't arrived when it was due to be unveiled last Saturday morning. The Rotary, who have bought the lifesaving equipment and had it fitted to the Town Council's toilets, decided to defer launching it until it was actually there... This didn't stop Pendle's MP having a photo opportunity with NWAS personnel on Saturday....

Not being plugged into Facebook, the smash and grab raid on the Kelbrook Road Spar garage at 2am last Friday morning had completely passed me by until Donald Cock told me about it this morning.

The news that the Metropolitan Police have instructed staff to delete references to successful discrimination cases against them to minimise damage to the force. Yes, I watched him take Nadal down, fantastic tennis, unassuming efficiency. He has to play again today. I like the Aussie wrecking crew as well with their vocal chants. The young guy will certainly be one to have a tenner on in a couple of years. Magic!

I'm in full bloom mode at the moment and taking lots of pictures for the portfolio and display for the judges. Taking advantage of the early morning sun today I got several useful photos, including this one of the wildflower area at Rankin Close.

Information of the bloom groups' activities in the run up to judging day next Tuesday can be found here.
