I can tolerate the heat until it gets to about 35C, and then I start to suffer, especially when there isn't a cloud in the sky. When it gets to 40C and above, it is blinds down, air-con on, and find something quiet to do that requires as little energy expenditure as possible ( usually reading). I drink lots of water, but have no appetite for food. I find sleeping difficult if night time temperatures are over 25C, and just about impossible if it is over 30C. In Summer I put a few inches of cold water in the bath, strip off when I get too hot and sit in it for a few mins throughout the day and a cold shower before bed. Nothing nicer than a cold shower and laying on the bed with the ceiling fan on a low twirl...

Ah well run out of time but at least we can get this seeded. I don't think you can see the little tree on the left, thus used to be part of the mound. Over three quarters done

Sue. All this 'thirsty' work is beginning to show. The mound is going downhill but so is the picture orientation.

Not again, I followed the instructions precisely on the iPad forum to remedy the problem but this turning photos seems to be a purely random thing and they are always the right way up for me.

I wonder if it's because you insert the pictures as attachments rather than via the gallery? Having said that the orientation of the attached file in your post is the right way up if you you look at it in the file viewer from within your post, very strange.

It's looking very good Sue! Do you think there was a building where your mound was or was it just a dumped pile of rubble? I would have got diverted looking for bits of pottery etc!
Hope you are going home for a rest! (I say that knowing full well that the answer will be "no" )

According to our plans when we bought the property there used to be a building where the gate is now. It could have been the loo or a bread oven. It was probably derelict like the rest of the property when the previous owner bought it. We think tnis is the rubble from the removal of that building. We seems to have concrete blocks that are the same date as the stables, early 1900, and we have uncovered something that looks like a concrete trough, I wondered if it was a sink or a step. There are lots of old bottles and some newer beer bottles, plus what looks like the springs from an old chair. Loads of kids broken toys and even odd shoes. Basically one big dumping ground. The quantity of soil has amazed us and we have spent hours spreading it out, digging it out and barrowing it to other parts of the garden. We are now left with a pile of shrapnel stones and several concrete blocks. Very hard work indeed but we like what we have done.

The tree is an elderberry so we have just picked the berries and I have made a jam with equal quantities of blackberries, also growing wild round the field. We have frozen, eaten and used pounds and pounds this summer.

It's amazing how much soil there is in a small mound if you decide to move it, especially by hand! I remember making the corner into the road at the bottom of the lane at Hey farm less sharp to make it easier to get the wagon in. I was amazed how many barrow loads of soil there were in that small bit of the croft!

Re. the muck shifting by hand. Next time you go past the Moorcock pub on the Blacko to Gisburn road have a look at the car park there cut into the hillside. This was dug out by hand by the Hanson brothers in the days when their mother owned and ran the pub. Possibly just before WW2. Hard men!
I wrote two articles yesterday and today will most likely be in the shed unless the writing bug grabs me. An important task will be to go and collect my registered letter up from the Post Office. Registered letters and telegrams almost always spelled trouble for my generation.....
Later.... it was OK. Can yopu remember me saying that I had sent off to Glasgow for my service records? That's what it is, I look forward to a good read!

Home after a wet cold trip back. Road works and blockages delayed us by over an hour so arrived home at just after 1 this morning having got up in France at just before 5 English time. One nice bit of post is a £25 Premium Bond win. Weather looks poor for a family wedding in Bingley on Friday. I know I shall freeze!

The wedding is actually at St Luke's, East Morton. What comes around. My cousin is getting married, a Widdup descendant marrying where another once Widdup lived and may even have married himself.

I am getting that fretful feeling. Febby has bought a tin of paint and a new paintbrush.
No indication of where he is heading with them yet, but I am on full alert and standing by with the first aid kit.
