Marilyn wrote:I am in agreement with Pluggy re its use.
But what on earth is it made of? Spaghetti soaked in something, then hardened?
I can see why Pluggy thinks it hangs in a wardrobe: the handle is made from a coat hanger. But he isn't right for its purpose.
Maz, something more durable than spaghetti. So another question, what is it made from?
Cathy, it isn't edible.
Don't think too deeply, it was made in fun and then I found a use for it.

A cat toy?
Hang it on a string and drive the cat nuts?

Its a ball of acrylic knitting yarn that got wet and melted when dried in too hot an oven. Used as a doorstop.

Material and mode of manufacture: Made out of the glue that builders use to stick insulation board to walls, extruded from the tube so that it wraps around itself until a ball is formed, then allowed to set.
Function: Attach small, dead fish to hook and drop into water so that the ball floats and the hook dangles the fish below the surface.
Result: Catch bigger fish.
Next step: Attach the bigger fish to the hook and repeat operation.
Objective: Catch even bigger fish.
Conclusion: Fish for tea tonight.

Not sure if this is the same stuff as you mean but I think you are near enough with the material. It is actually expanding foam used to plug up holes and the partially used can was left by the air-con installers. Love the idea of fishing with it, I haven't tried and not what I use it for. I'm cheating really because I emptied the can and when it had set I found a simple use for the object. I'll leave it another day, David Whipp usually comes up with an odd suggestion that is often near the mark.
EDIT:The picture of the object is on a glass topped coffee table and the object has a flat base, i.e. hemispherical.

Good grief, China, it's not a treacle miner's emergency float for flooded mines is it?

China, I think you are going to have put us out of our misery re it's use because I am going bonkers. What on earth can you use a lump of space-filler, with a coat hanger hook attached, FOR?!

Attach a piece of string and use it to pull the foam object through downpipes to clean them?
Likewise, but use it to tease the cat?
Hang it from the mirror in your car windscreen?
Use it as a mobile question mark?
Remember those spikes we used to stick invoices on? Well this one for people with a twisted sense of humour.

Love your suggestions, Maz, and from all the others. I said I was being unfair, what possible use could a lump of expanded foam with half a coat hanger embedded in it have?
Here it is in use:
Simply a cover for my waste bin in the kitchen.

So I don't have to look at the kitchen waste. Sorry, Cathy, no more quirky things. Next for shaving.

Where in Barlick can you find this plaque? (By-the-way, you can't see it on Google Street View)

I like notices like this but I don't know where this one is. There is a famous one that reads 'It is an offence to throw stones at this notice'.

No but in the general area. On the same wall is a more formal plaque detailing the history of one of the oldest buildings in Barlick.
