See
THIS for a report on the death of Ben Bradlee aged 93. He was editor of the Washington Post when they exposed the Watergate Affair and most significantly, the cover-up. It was the latter that led to the resignation of Nixon.

I'm sorry to hear that Brian is dead. He and Shirley were part of my life for so many years.....
Some years ago when I found Sagar's letter book from the time they started at Bankfield Shed over 100 years ago Brian was very interested of course and I made sure he had copies of everything I found.

RIP Jack Bruce, best known with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker as "Cream". One of the best rock and blues bass players. His bass lines on Cream's biggest songs are legendary. Nolic

Our oldest family member Phyllis has passed away at 101. An amazing, feisty individual who lived at home until just after her 101st birthday in July when her health started to fail. Her mind was still sharp. Her sister died in 2010 at 103.

Warren Clarke - Oldham born actor (I never knew that), best known for the Dalziel and Pascoe series has died aged 67. I liked him. I think I remember he was in Jewel in the Crown. That's a long time ago.

RIP Phil Hughes. My heart goes out to his family but also to the young man, Sean Abbott, who bowled the bouncer. It will haunt him for a long time.

For reasons that are quite understandable at this time of the year, deaths in families have a greater impact, in the past week we have lost two members of the extended family. The first of these was Valerie Atkinson a Widow who's Son married one of my nieces three years ago. Originally Valerie "Val" Anderson, a Barlicker and about my age, and I, shared a desk at Gisburn Road School, we remained at School together until 1955. She was quiet, yet pretty and lived here all of her life. At her Sons wedding three years ago when I asked "how are you" she told me that she had cancer. I am now glad that this information never went any further, as she did not tell her family until recently, she did not want a fuss. Within two days of this we learned that another family member had died, Harold Metcalfe of Longridge. Whilst Harold was not generally known here in Barlick, many of the older local Farmers knew him, for that is what he was, a good farmer. His two Sons Michael and Raymond are also known by our local Farmers as they have an agricultural business, dealing in and servicing farm quad bikes. I am now proud that Val told me, and that I kept it under my hat.
