It's the medallion machine for Johnny's big 1956 lathe. Here it is as found at Gargrave after fifty years of neglect. The lathe has two spindles to allow two identical chucks to be geared together. The original, say a cameo, is mounted in one chick and a suitable blank in the other. A blunt pointer follows the contours of the original and transfers that movement to a sharp cutter in the other holder. The materials used were soft, like Ivory but when he first made it Johnny copied a penny in copper and gave it to Newton asking him if he could make one. Beautifully made and it works....

Try this one. It has a trade name related to the design and that's what I am after......

I wonder how many Newton pennies circulated in Barlick after that day? It could have been Newton's own scheme of quantitative easing in Barlick!

As for the new object, I can't tell for sure whether the top part is a flap or a hole. Is it a tobacco pouch?

Certainly looks to be leather and folded over at the top and tucked into the flap at the bottom. No idea on a brand or trade name though.

Made up to be awarded the previous one, "thingy" comes in useful from time to time.

PanBiker, Its a mystery in its broadest sense. So for those who know and are graciously letting others have a do I'll ask what it the date on the adjacent building? Can this be classed as a general knowledge mystery? Obviously a lot of history round this building which may spark a full blown reply. Quoting the two Ronnies. Looks like a fancy stone sign to use (being 1699), I would say it belongs to a Heritage building.

I must apologise about the poor quality of the photo in terms of sunshine and shadows. We snapped this at the street markets today as we were wandering along looking for something that would make a good mystery object. Had some funny looks as we photographed it ( without buying it)...so we didn't have time to set the shot up well.
I can tell you it comprises of two "star shaped" sections, which are stacked together and secured with a wing-nut, obviously to keep them securely together for selling on the market stall.
Our market stalls run along a grassed area directly beside the beach. It was lovely down there today. There were several things I could have picked for my Mystery Object.

And sorry if my pic jumped in on your unsolved mystery, Plaques. I didn't mean that to happen.
