I love having the radio on while I am in the shed and heard Dame Vivian Westwood talking to Jenni. Wonderful woman and not because the went 'commando' to the palace (it turns out that she never wears knickers unless she is in trousers) but because of her forthright manner and her views on capitalism and inequality.
Another thing heard on R4 this mo0rning was news about and organisation called 'Men in Sheds'. See
THIS for news about a branch that has started in Nottinghamshire. What a good idea! All I can say is that it works for me and I wish them well.

The proposal to ban smoking in public places. So a pensioner sitting on a park bench or on a bench in the Town Square and smoking his pipe is going to become a criminal...

'Fraid so Stanley. You didn't think they were going to stop at the pubs did you? And they are after the car. Soon, it'll be the flats. Your saving grace will be UKIP who in their last manifesto (the one signed off by Nigel, which he said he hadn't read, and then disowned) pledged to bring back smoking in pubs. Mind you, they like lifting bans - one of their few current policies beyond Europe and immigration is to lift the ban on white asbestos as soon as we are out of the EU.

Was just about to reply about Australia's 'Men in Sheds' then saw the link but just to add to that it have proven to be very good for aged males who are/have been depressed or have felt lonely or isolated from the community after retiring.

Richard, the thing that really makes me angry is that pipe-smoking is subsumed in the really dangerous habit of cigarette smoking. There has never been any major body of evidence that it is anywhere near as bad for you. I shall just keep knocking my Condor back....
Cathy, that doesn't surprise me. I heard an interesting discussion on the value of play in adult life on R4 and how good it is for you. I often call the shed 'the Playroom' because that's how I see it, a voluntary activity that I enjoy.

It annoys me too Stanley, and to save clogging up this thread I've popped some comment on the 'lies, damn lies and statistics' thread.

T he Rollings Stones landed in Adelaide today (omg omg omg, sorry sorry... it's ok... I'm fine now...

) I saw them live here in the early 70's, I was only 15, great night.
(They were here a few months ago to perform but sadly that was the night Mick Jagger learned that his lady had just taken her own life and all gigs were immediately cancelled).
I'm sure everything will go according to schedule this time and it will prove an unforgettable night once again. Rock Cool Granddaddies!!

A good example of a community working together to beat a burglar preying on the town centre businesses.

Unfortunately tickets were too expensive this time. The cheapest tickets for the Melbourne show were $375.

It appears that the footballer due for release today was still being paid £20.000 per week whilst in prison, madness!! How about this for respect of the law, the car is the property of a middle eastern immigrant, this is where he always puts it:-
Work has commenced on the four new houses on the old Fosters Arms site. The foundations and footings are massive in comparison with modern practice, the foundations are 4' deep and 2' wide steel reinforced, over 1200 blocks have gone into the footings.
The houses are to be stone faced to match the existing Fosters Arms, as will the roofs.

It's to do with the settings on your user control panel Moh, you probably haven't adjusted for BST. If you wait for the clocks to change at the end of this month you should be on the right time again.

The Enterprise Market run by Gisburn Road School was very popular this morning.
Here's a short Visit Barnoldswick film about the event.

These short videos of Barlick are great. I send them to the kids in Oz and I'm sure many more people do. A video of people in a busy Town Square with plenty of Barlick faces would go down well.....

Stanley's not the only forgetful one...
Eight o'clock this morning was the time set for Bill and Ben, our Town Square tower planters, to move to their winter quarters on Fernlea Avenue. The planters weigh between two and a half and three tons, so we have a machine to come and shift them.
Here's one of the planters pictured from a previous year.
I duly turned up at 5 to 8 and got everything ready for the move... 75 minutes later, I was still waiting... eventually, I got hold of our machine man, who had forgotten about the job...
Four and a quarter hours later, and Bill and Ben have happily taken up residence on Fernlea Avenue... a joyful Sunday morning!
