I forgot to mention that I think the tractor they used to tow the wagon was powered by compressed air in a holding tank. I was having a smoke in the canteen one day and I noticed a sign-writer working on the large painted notice behind the serving counter. He was drawing a red line under the current entries. When I asked him what he was doing he took me to the window and showed me a large hole in one of the bunded locations where the explosives were packed in flimsy wooden huts. If my memory serves me right two women had been killed in an unexplained explosion a couple of weeks before.

Try this oldie....

You have all forgotten haven't you.... This is the cast iron vaulting in the cross tunnel which connects both bores of the Standedge railway tunnels. (LINK) In 1871 on the completion of the second of the two original tunnels, the floor of the cross tunnel was paved with encaustic tiles, the area decorated and the directors held a dinner there. The vaulting and tiles were still in place when I broke the law and trespassed the tunnels in 1978. There are cross tunnels into the old canal tunnel as well and at that time it was closed to traffic but has since been reopened.

I agree with Cazza.
We had planned to visit the island, but every time we mentioned it, we got such negative responses from all sorts of locals, that we gave it a miss.

I love the replies! China is closest actually but not there yet but you have had enough punishment.... It's a close up of the skin on a very good (and expensive) Israeli date. Chaudrey's sell them and I allow myself two a day, they are wonderful and reputedly very good for you.
