MYSTERY OBJECTS
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
But the markings are not those of an ordinary ruler. They don't usually have so many digits scribed on them. Having 56/64ths for instance seems a bit perverse. Most rulers would have only a digit at the half inch mark or none at all. Does your special one have metric on the other side? Or 10ths of an inch?

Oh I jumped the gun there, dear dear, think it was around 11pm here, a bit late and I missed Stanley's post.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Tiz, you're right, that's the difference. It's a pure Imperial rule, marked in 16ths and 8ths on the reverse but without the intermediate markings as it's easy to count the divisions. I have other rules marked the same way with the intermediate numbers but never considered using them. Now I have discovered the advantage of the numbers on the divisions I have swapped from the normally marked rules to others that are the same. If you look at Shed matters you'll see the swap. It's a lot easier to count the divisions with the intermediate numbers in the smaller divisions. You live and learn!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I think that has frozen your brains. It's a foundry pattern made of cast iron for a steam engine lubricator. The black part is a wooden core which would be made of sand so that the casting was hollow. It came from Kirkham's at Bolton when they went out of business, John let me raid the pattern shop because they were all to be destroyed. Such a shame, more to patterns than meets they eye and a very skilled and expensive job making them.

I can think of three suggestions, all quite different, but I will let others go first in case one of them is right.
I do recognise the tablecloth pattern underneath! We were sat at that on Tuesday...drinking coffee, eating Tim Tams and putting the world to right.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I'm not going to torture you with it. It's a blacksmith's vice minus its screw and handle. Someone, many years ago has used the tree trunk as a support for it and over the years the tree has grown round it. It was right next to Forty Steps near the beck where the path branches off down Ouzledale to Wapping. I think it was ripped out when the land on that corner was developed for housing, it wasn't there, or is hidden behind the fence, the last time I looked for it.
Have a think and see if you can think of a new object. In the meantime, here's an oldie for you...
