I'm trying to think of a CI implement that would have a point like this. The only thing I can come up with is a Duck Foot cultivator......

Ian was almost there when he said it was a smoothing iron.

The only thing I can think of following Ian's lead is a smoothing iron cast iron trivet.

CI block for heating in the fire and then putting in a box iron.

You've got it Stanley. It's called a slug and the irons were called slug irons or box irons. The one in this link is broken in the same place as mine.

Well, bless my soul, we learn something new every day! Thanks for putting it up as a Mystery Object, Wendy...you've joined up a few more nerve cell connections in my brain.

I have a collection of flat irons Tiz, and have enjoyed using them in the past... heating them up on the stove, but although the shape of my object is right it has no smooth surfaces . It was a friend who suggested that it could be from a box iron.
The use of the word "slug" is interesting too...because it's shaped a bit like a bullet?

The word slug was sometimes used by smelters and the like to describe lumps of metal produced e.g. for forging. The bullet was perhaps originally regarded as a small lead slug.

Useful word. The pellets fired out of air guns are slugs, also a lump of water carried over into the engine from the boiler.

Sorry Gloria, specific yes but not correct. Time we knocked this one on the head I think... It's at The Museum of Modern Art in NY. Ethel had taken me their to the huge Picasso retrospective exhibition. Wonderful experience but total sensory overload, I only managed one and a half floors and had to come out for a coffee, a smoke and a breather. The lady with the stockings caught my attention in the sculpture garden which was the refreshment area. (I can remember that the last piece I looked at was the bull's head based on old bicycle handlebars...)
Next for shaving?
