I was reared in trousers and braces like that David! Our road was an LTN but only by virtue of the builder having run out of money when he built the houses, It had enormous potholes and wasn't adopted until the 1950s. Nobody drove up the road unless they had to!

A bit harsh? I wonder where he got it from. It's too big for him, but I doubt he had much choice as to its size. Like the pram wheels for 'bogeys' (soapboxes if you're posh) and roller skates - they just appeared from somewhere onto the play scene.

Looking back again at the LTN link- and I would urge that you do - I think that it may explain a lot that is wrong with modern life. Just see the level of detail in every section of the whole thing. Talk about 'overkill'.

I theorise that the use of IT in fact generates more work, and an excess of regulation soaks up the glut of well educated people no longer needed, or unwilling to do actual 'proper jobs'. "It's all for your own good" and the words 'risk' and 'safety' will feature in what they will say from their lofty superannuated positions.

I guess in the 1930's a notice in the local newspaper (remember them?) and the sign shown, signed by the Town Clerk, would suffice. Of course cars were few and far between, so it was a lot easier.

I did as you suggested David and reread the LTN doc. You're right of course, like all the rest of these 'initiatives' (There's even a special word to describe them....) it is over-thought, verbose and strong on inviting comment (Because it's always handy when the shit hits the fan to be able to say that you consulted widely, the implication being that it's the people who responded that are at fault....)
The reason they are so popular is because using IT they can be done from a warm office and you keep your hands clean. This makes your staff look busy even though they are actually doing sod-all. There was a time when they would have been out on the street collecting rent money, acting as a School Bobby (remember them?), park-keeper or Sanitary Inspector. Now all they have to do is produce a constant stream of initiatives and 'team briefings'.
I must stop, I could get very boring on this subject, in fact I probably just have.... Sorry.

Parts of the UK could become home to mosquitoes capable of spreading dengue fever, chikungunya and zika virus by the 2040s and 2050s, health officials warn.
The UK Health Security Agency's report is based on a worst-case scenario, which would see high emissions and temperatures rising by 4C by 2100.
It says other effects include a rise in heat-related deaths and flooding.
But many potential problems are still avoidable with swift action, it says.
Steep cuts to greenhouse gas emissions could avert some of the worst consequences, it adds.

I heard that report also David and my first thought was that whoever is responsible for it should be set to doing something useful and not indulging in fantasy reporting that is of no use to anyone.
I shall ignore it completely and carry on as I always have done.....

Anyone who looks on Youtube will surely have come across Judge Fank Caprio from Providence, Rhode Island, with his unique voice and kindness. He's one of the good guys. This is rather sad - I saw it first yesterday. I'm fairly sure it's genuine, and it's a bit upsetting.

Stoney Bank Road is closed due to a gas leak so don’t try coming down into Earby from the top road as you won’t be able to get through. ROAD CLOSED signs are in place.

I hope it doesn't cause any damage and gets fixed quickly! Bad time of year for problems with gas.....

There were Cadent vans outside the cottages when I drove up Stoneybank yesterday lunchtime, they must be digging the road up.

Just noticed that Aldi were open till 10.00pm, and Tesco are open till midnight.

Just back from visiting both - all shopped up now. No crowds and I got everything I went for, including the 15p veg deals, and walked straight to an empty checkout at Tesco with two half price legs of NZ lamb.

Result. . .

Something that Mrs Tiz gave me for Xmas. We've got several magnifying glasses, large and small, handled ones and those metal ones that retract with a swivelling cover. We carry them with us because of our geological, botanical and zoological interests but also for the pure pleasure of being able to see better all the small things that make up our world. This glass is very good for slipping into a pocket or handbag. It's not a toy, it's well made and robust. Everyone should have one!

I think we're all going in the same direction.

I use a magnifying glass constantly in the shed for reading scales on machines and measuring tackle. This old lens is always in reach. It's out of a very old slide projector and was in a job lot of tools I bought once. Most useful item in the box I reckon.....

Can someone remind me what day it is? We had two consecutive 'weekends' last week - the bins should have gone out on Tuesday instead of Monday. (they didn't) and every day is the same - rainy dark and miserable. I'm working on the hypothesis that it's Saturday tomorrow.

I know the feeling David. My life is bad (or good !) enough at normal times because I have no difference in my days. When everyone else joins the club I am in trouble. I've checked and it is Saturday today, all day!
I don't know about anyone else but I'll be glad when we get over New Years Day and we can settle into the collar dealing with 2024.

Margaret has just mailed to say she and Mick and Alex are out in front of the house with the neighbours having a New Year's party. A different world.... It's started raining again here in Barlick....

As many of you will know, I have been building up a local history index for many years and the way I manage it is to fill in cards and store them in a small index in the kitchen and when I have enough, to go and put them in their place in the big index upstairs in the bathroom. I have been meaning to empty the cache for a long while but never got round to it, it's a boring back breaking job.
The good news for Wendy (Because when I die the index passes to her and the Earby Hist Soc) is that this morning I bit the bullet and I have spent over an hour installing the new cards.....
