MYSTERY OBJECTS
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
The only reason I got that right is that my sister-in-law brought me one back from the US. It's exactly the same shape but in shiny metal. Nicely made but I always found it difficult to write with - too slippy to hold due to the highly polished surface.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I have tried to make this a little more difficult by blanking out some of the detail. Even then for those with the spotters certificate please keep quiet for a little while. Its in Barlick of course. Where is it?

Tiz, I have had (and still have!) pens like that. The matt surface is OK, good grip.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Shops on wooden stilts sounds like it must be an area subject to flooding, while blood tub suggests an abattoir?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Food, shops, abattoirs, blood tubs... Yuck.
Black Puddings. Was it a shop where they made Black Puddings ?

I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I must have walked past this particular plaque hundreds of times before I noticed it. I suspect the 'blood tub' bit is referring to the type of plays that the theatre put on. Confessing my own ignorance its time to open it up to the locals who probably not only know where it is but with a bit of luck will expand on its history.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I know where the plaque is but will not reveal just yet.
There is something else about this photo though. I have seen it many times but only just noticed the building in the far distance where the bank is now. It looks like it could be a pub, if so what was it called? Is there anything in the trade directories?

Was `Red Barn' the name of the pub in the photo?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I pulled this out of the original file. Looks like a shop to me.
You have the right Red Barn, the play, not the name of a pub Tiz.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
They look to be loading a horse and cart there, or taking something off. I'm pretty familiar with where all the Barlick pubs are, (or were) and you are probably right but it just looked like one with the sign directly above the door.
Anyway no ones got Plaques plaque yet, it is tucked away a bit and can be missed easily.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Obviously PanBiker and Stanley know where it is and I suspect one or two others but they are keeping it secret. I never expected it to take all the twists and turns that it did. Even a trip down memory lane for Wendy. So here it is :-
. PanBiker is correct in saying its tucked away a bit. Probably most people dashed past it to pick up their pensions when the Postoffice was open and now they can't wait to get to the bookies. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Emma Clark and others in the LTP mentioned the travelling theatre that used to set up on the site.

That's right but it is specialised. Clue, Why is it triangular?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Why is it triangular? Is it something to do with making it easier to read the measurement? Perhaps the ruler is used in a situation where you cannot look down on it but only at eye level.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
You're the only one attempting this one Tiz so I am going to come clean. The advantage of an accurately made triangular body for a ruler is that if you put it on a shaft it is automatically parallel to the shaft. It can't do anything else and so a 'shaft ruler' like this one is ideal for laying out keyways or any other measurement that has to be dead accurate and square on a round shaft. It's a brilliant bit of design.
Right! Try this one....
