Gloria got there first. certain poisons had to be in ribbed bottles, often brown or green glass. As Wendy says, they were ribbed so that you could identify them in the dark. The system doesn't seem as common these days.
Tiz, you are close, it originally held Oil of Wintergreen. Must see if I can get some more..... I'd used what was left to top up my old fashioned white embrocation.....

P got it first but he was a gent as usual and left space for others. Maz got with her second guess, it's a lovely cut-throat razor I bought from Mr Sneath when his barber's shop was on park Avenue where the laundrette is now. (1959)



Made of best silver steel (High carbon steel) in Solingen where all the best razors came from. This was the best you could get, it has an ivory handle. Notice there is a lump missing out of the edge. One of my daughters sharpened a pencil with it.....

Stealth submarine?

No idea really but maybe an old fortification of some type.

Stanley is right that it's designed with `stealth' features, but it's not a submarine (even though it looks like one!) and Gloria can be considered correct in the sense that it is a kind of fortification and linked to warfare. I won't drag it out any longer because nobody will get the exact identity unless, like me, they happen to have seen a news report about the latest American navy destroyer. It's the first Zumwalt-class destroyer, the largest built for the US Navy, sailing down the Kennebec River from the Bath Iron Works in Maine and out to sea for the first time to undergo trials. The word sailing almost seems inappropriate and it's not surprising Gloria came up with the word fortification. It looks more like a castle rising out of the sea, or something from the new Star Wars film! But on the other hand the shape of the bow and stern reminds me of a battleship from the late 1800s era. It's a European Standard Sphagetti Meter for checking the diameter of tubular pasta. It's based on the design first introduced by Ernesto Caprotti in 1912 in response to increasing fraud committed by the Sicilian Mafia who had discovered there was money to be made out of spaghetti. It's a cunning design featuring dual purpose twin arms which, when operated like scissors, can be used to slice spaghetti strands cleanly. The device is made out of steel so that if it falls into a batch of the pasta it can be recovered using a magnet. The size of the holes allows for a range of tubular pasta to be checked, from thin spaghetti through bucatini to cannelloni.

I retract my offer to eat a hat, cos I think Pluggy has it. I've just realised the open edges...knitting and crochet needle gauges are not open like that on the edges, they are simply holes that one pushes the needle into to gauge the diameter.

Yesterday's object hasn't excited you, I'm not surprised. It's a collection of drill plates for checking the size of Letter, Number, Imperial and Metric drills. You don't use them often but when needed they are essential.

I have one just the same, I got it while still suffering the paranoia after being pick pocketed on Nice railway station a few years ago. Never used it since airport security was tightened, they don't like you hiding things about your person.

A money belt! Thank God for that, I thought it was an odd shape to be Stanley's hernia truss!

It might be designed to be a money belt but the real question is what does Stanley use it for? Does he keep his tobacco pouch in it?

Pop a heat pack in there, wear it low, and he has a "Peter Heater" for cold mornings in the shed.
Wear it a bit higher and spin it around the back to keep the kidneys warm....

Liz has it and yes, I got it for when I was travelling and carrying money. Only used it once.....
