You've got as far as liquids, it's so esoteric that I think I'll have to come clean. They are oil tanks at Bancroft. There were two main oils used, linseed and whale oil. Linseed was for soaking shuttles and whale oil for the loom leathers.
Next for shaving?

Probably very easy, but it may have you scratching your head, "where have I seen that ?"

We have a "no plastic bags" policy in South Australia. You are expected to take cloth bags to the supermarket etc with you. You only get a plastic bag in a department store, but I don't even get those as I carry fold up cloth bags in my handbag.
We have lived like this for years...saving the planet one plastic bag at a time. We even take cloth bags to UK when on holiday and wouldn't change to plastic for all the tea in China. (We've had some funny looks but stick to our principles...it is law here, so one just gets used to it.)

That is brilliant, why on earth we can't do that here I don't know. Well done Australia.

Sadly, not all of Australia does it Gloria, but South Australia does.

But...to put some perspective on it, South Australia is bigger in area than the entire UK.

In the UK you have to pay if you want a basic plastic carrier bag in a supermarket...but not if you are shopping in a small shop, which surprises me. Why not all shops?

Our supermarkets do have plastic bags that you can buy if you forget to take your cloth/canvas shopping bags with you.
They cost .15cents each and are very strong bags. They can be used again and again many times, and then you can leave them at the store to be recycled. I think our cloth/ canvas bags are about $2. each. (I have about 8 or 10).

Initially the cloth bags were free. They last for years. I have still got originals after 10 years ( they wash well too).
I have never bought a plastic bag at a supermarket Cazza...I always have two "foldables" in my handbag.
The cloth bags also apply to buying wine. We have special cloth bags with pockets in so bottles don't clang together. They work a treat too. Always keep a couple in the car...

Good grief, I'd have thought twice about doing a shopping bag if I'd have known it was going to spawn all this.

Before the Aussies get too smug, its a Co-op "bag for life", made of thick plastic intended for multiple uses. The South Australia legislation is for sub 15 micron single use plastic bags. The illustrated "bag for life" would be exept. The co-op charge 10p for them and replace them for free if you give them an old damaged/torn/knackered "bag for life" back. Single use thin bags are "sold" for 5p each, the proceeds are donated to charity as they are with all UK supermarkets. The "bag for life" started long before the UK shopping bag legislation came into power.

There is a case that plastic is a more environmentally resposible material for long term shopping bags since they use a lot less resources and energy to produce than cloth bags. Given back to the supermarket they get recycled into other plastic stuff (often into plastic outdoor furniture). The co-op did use biodegradeable bags at one time, they were a pain in the backside, if you put them in a cupboard or a drawer with stuff in them, 12 months later the bag had crumbled to dust and whatever was in the bag was loose in the cupboard/drawer.

It's often easier to knock things than actually make an effort to change habits of a lifetime. Like us though, you live on an island. One day all this rubbish is going to need dealing with.
At least nothing I brought my milk home in will end up wrapped around a dolphin's neck, thousands of miles out to sea..
