Thanks for the recommendation Richard. It's on it way to Tripps Towers It will be interesting to compare and contrast with other books of the type, which I have.

!820 - Rural Rides by William Cobbett.

1927 - In search of England by H.V. Morton. I thought he was the Beachcomber author for quite a while, but later found that is J.B.Morton). There is a series of these 'In Search of' books. Mild OCD of course requires you to buy them all, to get the full set.

1934 - English Journey by J.B. Priestly. (I can't put a hand on this at the moment, but it's around somewhere. I remember he also went to dog racing. I hope Engel gets nearer to an understanding of the sport than JBP did.

PS- I just saw that on the fly leaf of the HV Morton is a signature of one -
H.G. Daniell Bainbridge. A quick google shows he was -

1883. Howard Gurney Daniell-Bainbridge; third son of Richard Percival Daniell, of London; of Trinity College, Oxford; matriculated i8th October, 1875, aged 17; B.A., 1878; M A., 1882; of Cuddes don Theological College, 1879; curate of Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, 1880-83; now, and since 1890, Minor Canon and Sacrist of Westminster Abbey.

There is also a London Gazette entry showing he was appointed some sort of chaplain to Queen Victoria, but that does not surrender easily to CTrL C.

Whatever did we do before the interweb.

If you enjoy this one, you might enjoy Matthew Engel’s ‘Eleven Minutes Late: A train journey to the soul of Britain’. The title comes from the Reggie Perrin novels by the recently deceased David Nobbs, where an exasperated Reggie writes to the then BR saying as his train was always 11 minutes late, it should be timetabled to arrive 11 minutes later and so always be on time.

Again, I found this a very funny book as he has a really dry sense of humour which I like.

A nice visit by Mick and Sarah bring goodies from the NE for the shed. My course in the shed is now clear.....
You've got the right books there David, I hadn't heard about the Engels book Richard and have just ordered it.... One book well worth considering David is 'Made in England' by Dorothy Hartley which looks at rural crafts.... An interesting book only surpassed by her 'Food in England' which is brilliant (get an old hardback edition if you can, far better quality of illustrations....)

They say there are only 6 degrees of separation between any two people. I'm smiling that I have established a link of only three steps between me and Queen Victoria.

And as Daniell-Bainbridge was a canon there are only three steps between you and God! (Mind you, if you're religious you might tell me there's only one step between you and God.)

My incoming telephone calls failing and most of all the frustration of repetitive calls necessary to semi-automated help lines. Not good for an old Bloke!
Mind you, my support system worked well, daughter Susan came up to check on me as soon as she heard I was not answering the phone .... Daughters are splendid!

A visit from my grand daughter's partner, Muthomi Kiragu. A bright lad and a pleasure to see him despite the fact he was over three hours late! These youngsters have a different concept of punctuality than old farts like me!
I can ring the engineers about my phone from 9AM this morning..... They texted me the number. First time I have ever had a long text on the phone and it took me a while to find out how to scroll down...., (It's very old and the buttons don't always respond!)

11 years ago today we moved to Barlick, from the south of England. 2 weddings and 5 grandchildren later I think we'll be staying.

Nice Kev.... It's 56 years since I came here and I think that most are getting round to accepting it.....
BT engineers rang yesterday and they come tomorrow morning to the phone.... There is hope yet.

As I get older i increasingly hate uncertainty, it makes me feel insecure. So the fixing of the fault on my master socket yesterday and the assurance from Hassan the BT engineer that the fault didn't incur the £60 penalty that Talktalk had threatened me with if it was an 'internal fault' was a relief. He warned me to watch my bill and if the charge was levied to object and cite his report on the fault which makes it clear it was a failure of the BT master socket and therefore their responsibility.

Later....

Grand daughter Jess's partner Muthomi has got his citizenship today. I've informed him that he now owns part of the National Debt.... (my share!)

I logged on this morning as usual and found that either everyone has ignored the site for the day or it has been off line.... Very disturbing!
I sent mail to Maz in Oz and she responded straight away saying that she had noticed the same thing. No doubt all will become clear at some point....

What attracted my attention today?
I looked at my husband and took several seconds to work out what was different about his face. Finally it dawned on me.
Silly beggar has "trimmed" his eyebrows (and I bet London to a brick he wasn't wearing his glasses when he did it cos they do not match!) :laugh5:

Oh dear, poor David - just don't take him anywhere for a few days.
At least he didn't draw blood this time.

No evidence of permanent injury, Caz.
Last time he dripped blood was last Sunday....somehow injured himself painting the back fence, and he claimed a plant attacked him....

I was tidying a corner out in the shed and found a bag full of 50mm long 6mm self tapping screws with 10mm hexagon heads... Expensive little buggers. If anyone wants them call round and see me, they are up for grabs free.

Look forward to seeing you then Kev.
Later after posting shed matters. As I was going out to walk Jack I was told the leccy was off in the town centre and the Co-op was closed as well. By the time we were coming back I saw lights in the Co-op and so I suppose it's on again. The leccy on this circuit is very unreliable of late....

Voltage on parts of the grid went down to 75-80v between 09.45 and 11.00. Lights were struggling but anything that needed any kind of reasonable voltage and current was off. I plugged my meter in via a safeblock to see what was going on. Came back up at around 11.00am no news yet as to the cause.

Ian, thanks for that. I've copied your post and sent it to David Whipp, he keeps a log of outages to back up his complaints as a Councillor to the suppliers....
The quality of the supply, particularly to the town centre has deteriorated of late. Someone somewhere isn't investing enough time and money in maintenance! Good thing we have a Councillor like David who raises these matters with them!
If you want to see what's exciting me at the moment have a look at Shed Matters. I am almost ready to start teaching myself how to use a shaper. Completely new technology for me....
