I was thinking lorries as well, it looks quite robust and is a bit bigger than the normal small cylinder type.

Is it a pin extractor? The left hand end is definitely split and could possibly open apart if you wound the hexagonal right hand end. But I've never actually seen a pin extractor so I'm guessing again, so perhaps I'll generalise a bit and say "for extracting something".

It's a Bar Mor tool holder for use in small lathes. The split section at the end is a collet which takes standard 1/4" tools. The nut on the end draws the collet back into a tapered section at the left hand end and holds the small tool solid. Apart from being easy to change the tool it could be used with very short and therefore economical lengths of high speed steel.

I don't think so Maz. To be honest, I don't know the reason for them. I have sent this pic to paople all over the world and nobody has given me a satisfactory answer yet.

A nice tidy way of feeding the coolant through. Possibly on a horizontal drilling machine or capstan type lathe.

Are the flutes there to allow the waste to move up and out through the drill?

No Tiz because the flutes are inside the Morse Taper socket. P has a good suggestion but in practice I can see the coolant dribbling on to the lathe bed where the flutes leave the tailstock. Could possibly work on a vertical drilling spindle. The bottom line is that I don't know and have never been able to find anyone who does. I've sent the pic to Abom79 on Youtube who is one of my favourite machinists and a good man..... It's more complicated than it looks because milling the flutes on a taper is canny stuff! The only thing I have ever come up with is that someone did it so that if the drill slipped in the taper socket (a common circumstance) it cleaned the surface up and re-established grip.

China is right in saying it's an `LED work light that you wear on your head' but can he say why it's different to the usual such lights that you might find in DIY stores etc?

I'm going off where the clips are positioned and I'd say that if you wore it on your forehead it would point downwards, as if for reading a book. But is there something more? Like it incorporates a wifi camera and so it can be pointing down at whatever you are examining whilst you are looking at a magnified image on a laptop or monitor. I'm just guessing and padding out my answer...

Just a thought, if it works as I suggest it would be a godsend to Stanley for his intricate machinings. So if it hasn't already been invented, invent the gadget now.

No UV, no wifi camera, and it's really quite simple. I've come across it through my interest in geology but there are lots of other people who would find it useful in their work. Have a closer look at its fittings...

It was the clip on fitting that sent me wondering about fitting it onto a helmet. Specifically on the neb. so thinking you would be interested in looking for Neanderthal bits in caves brought me to a LED helmet camera cap light. Light.
