Do you remember the lady who ran the shop in Kilchoan Stanley? She was a really dour character who was reluctant to smile.

Maz, I have visions of everyone lining up between 12.50 and 1pm waiting for their daily newspaper.

I can't remember the town but we were in outback WA and 'today's papers came tomorrow', when the news was old. Seemed a bit pointless buying one when we'd ween it on the TV the night before.

We stopped buying any kind of newspaper years ago. Even with the dailies I came to the conclusion that there was no point paying for something that contains yesterdays news and someone else's opinion. I can get current news and plenty of comment via TV and radio and if I want to do a crossword I will buy a book full.

I totally agree Ian - I haven't bought a newspaper for 40 years or more. I get all the news I need from my fortnightly Private Eye.

Well done Pete! A man after my own heart.... The only paper I buy is the BET because I like seeing my articles in print and file them all with the original copy....

Generally, we only buy the newspaper on a Saturday.
As a ritual, hubby makes Cappucinos ( coffee) and we sit together to solve the Quizmaster questions and the crosswords ( neither of us terribly good at Cryptic, but we occasionally get them out).
Hubby does the Sudoko. ( it can take him all day)
And finally, I read the "deaths"!

A lot to be said for rituals! Saturday wouldn't be the same without the paper!

Same here, Maz. We used to pick it up on a Saturday morning from the village shop when we went to the bakery for bread. The shop closed a few months ago and we had to do a 10-mile round trip to a local town's newsagent to get a paper so we tried to schedule our supermarket trip for Saturday. Then we were saved the trouble! A Mr Patel took over the newsagent's shop and set up deliveries, not just to the town but to the surrounding villages. Our paper now arrives through the letterbox before we rise on a Saturday morning.

I noted the Welby story also Wendy. Family secrets are strange beasts and I will believe what his mother said. I was over forty years old before I uncovered the whole truth about our family and as any of you will know who have taken the trouble to read my memoirs you will know that they were quite interesting! The nice thing is that I seem to have the same attitude as Canterbury, I never got angry, just tried to understand and sympathise.
What grabbed me is the increasing certainty that the back storm is over and the muscle healing nicely. I am almost without pain and after another easy day today will slip back into gentle Shed activity. I shall not do anything stupid, I'll continue the treatments until I am absolutely certain. No more five hour shifts!

I could understand his mother not knowing if he wasn't the spitting image of his natural father! Pleased to hear that your back is improving.

With regard to Skydiving, I have always wanted to do it. When I was working at Sixth Form I found out that a couple of the sports teachers did it as a hobby. Weekend camps up near Lancaster, take your tent and gear, you pay for the camping and then there is a set tariff for airlifts from the field. Not particularly expensive compared to lots of other sports. Initial outlay of course with training and buying the gear but that's the same with many sports or pastimes. I got quite enthusiastic about it and could afford to do it at the time. I ran into a problem though, I discovered I was just on the cusp of being too old, the cut off being 55 for a first solo jump. I was 55 at the time and did not have enough time to do the training and get the solo in. A year earlier and I would have been OK. As long as you solo before 55 you can continue as long as you are fit.

I can of course still do a tandem jump but have no interest at all in that. My lad Jack did one for charity and he says it's a pretty weird feeling jumping out of an aircraft strapped to another blokes crotch.

Some years ago, I wanted to train as a Vet Nurse. Their only criteria was that I had to be 25 or under...and guess what? I was 26!
I was quite angry about it at the time...( 26 being no age at all).

I have no interest in sky-diving whatsoever. I've had plenty of white-knuckle in my life and don't need any more thank you!
I have decided that the residual pain in my back is normal healing so I've stopped taking the Aspirin and wearing a belt. I'll keep the rubbing up for a while.... The ache in the general area is most likely the muscles that have been tensed to support the injury gradually relaxing. That's my version, we'll soon find out if I am wrong!

See THIS for a BBC report on the climb-down by the FIA in that they have agreed to revert to the 2015 system of qualifying. The new knock-out formula was universally slammed by the teams and drivers and in the end the governing body has been forced to agree 'for the good of the sport'. Thank God for that, it was boring, too complicated and not effective.

The non-arrival of my castings.... Hopefully they will arrive today. I shall not be doing any further work on the engines until they arrive, I would be guessing and that's dangerous. I have an interesting sideboard at the moment, some would call it clutter!

The article in today's BET about mobile phones being banned at West Craven High on the grounds that they are an unnecessary distraction and can be used for bullying and harassment. I thoroughly approve and wonder why this practice isn't standard at all schools?

The practice is already used in many schools and its benefits proven. Likewise, getting kids outside more and walking or running is being recognised as a beneficial in primary schools; the only problem with it is the teachers find that a significant proportion of the kids have never spent time outside and they "don't know how to run". Honestly, I'm not making it up.

There is a huge discussion ongoing on one of the local Facebook sites regarding the West Craven decision. Some of the reasons given by parents as to why their child should need a phone at school have to be read to be believed. When I am exam invigilating up at school, the first five minutes can be spent relieving the kids of their phones which are placed in a sectioned box and a numbered card issued. Hopefully that will become one less job to do. Will have to continue issuing pens though for all those that turn up for an exam without one.

I unsubscribed from Barnoldswick Talk on Facebook months ago. It was utterly depressing, any positive benefits were totally lost in the negative.

Does anyone remember what the main Barlick website used to be like? It was the reason Doc started Oneguy.
