I don't know whether Plaques's is right about his statue. We need some input from the Aussies on this one.

We do have this kind of architecture in Adelaide, but considering that from the picture both buildings appear to be on the one piece of land, I think it would be too grand to be in Adelaide.
Even tho the smaller building does resemble our Adelaide Town Hall.

You're on the the right track Cathy, but not Adelaide. The photo would have been taken in the early 1890s and I guess the location looks a bit different now!

I initially thought it was St Paul's cathedral in Melbourne. The architecture is very similar but the spires are not right. Can we at least have a state to start looking?

You got it, Wendy! Sydney Town Hall, and the building next door is the Cathedral. Judging from the picture in your link the Town Hall must have been much extended at the back in more recent times. I'm very impressed by the amount of historical detail on the Town Hall's web site. The caption to the photo follows. It was in the book that my ancestor Levi Fish was awarded in 1895. Cathy, sorry about that and for being late in responding. This is the first chance I've had to look at OG since my last post in this topic. Your post wasn't showing up when I did mine. This has happened to me several times recently and I wonder whether the forum software has changed? In the past, if someone posted in the topic between me starting my post and trying to send it the software would let it go immediately. It put up a notice saying that someone else had posted in the interim and showed that person's post. Once again, it didn't show the warning this time.

Well done Cathy for coming up with the name of the Cathedral - I hadn't named it because I didn't know it had a name. I'd just assumed it was called `Sydney Cathedral'!

Is that brass inlay ornamental or functional like a wedge in mallet? And why has it brass only on one edge? I'm going for some sort of striking tool like a mallet for knocking bungs into barrels of ale. Or is it brass because it is sparkproof and used by Guy Fawkes for sealing powder kegs? Just thinking out loud...
