Something is niggling at me that this picture was taken in Colne but I don't know why! There was an Alfred Harrison b 1899 who in 1939 is described as a fish and fruit salesman, living at Bents down Skipton Old Road. I will investigate further....

Wellhouse Farm on Church Street in about 1895 just before it was demolished to make room for the new shops that were being built. You can see that the building on the right is new, it is ashlar masonry and has toothing stones left ready for the new build that will replace the old Post Office. We know that when the Local District Board was formed on May 14th 1890 they met in Wellhouse Farm. At that time it was being used as the Post Office, John Lancaster was the postmaster. The Barnoldswick Urban District Council was formed in 1894 and at that time continued to meet in the farm. As far as I can make out it was demolished in 1895 and redeveloped as part of the new row of three storey buildings that are on that side of the street to this day. I suspect that the man in the doorway in the picture is John Lancaster but have no proof.

Here's the block of ashlar built shops that was completed after Wellhouse Farm was demolished. Image done i 2005.
Notice that in 1895 the block was only two stories high. There must have been a change of plan because it was actually completed as three storeys and it is evidently the same build.

Alwin Simpson and young Sid Demaine in 1977 having a call over the wall at the Old Tannery opposite Bancroft engine house. This was before Alwin lost his eye in an accident with a thorn while hedging. Both dead but part of my life in Barlick for so long. Not forgotten actually.......

When I was a lad the Bell ticket punch was universally used on trams and buses. True to its name, a bell rang when a ticket was punched. The position of the clip out of the side of the ticket indicated what stage you had got on and so an inspector could tell later if you were on the correct fare. The conductors who used the punches were called 'clippies' because they clipped tickets

Milk stand where kit milk was picked up from by the milk wagon each morning. They were common. This one was in Barlick at Barnsey at the junction of Rainhall Road and the lane up to Rainhall Rock. I don't know whether this has survived, most of them are long gone.

A mortar mill set up with a portable steam engine driving it in 1898. These mills ground a mixture of putty lime (made by slaking quick lime in pits) and the clinker from a could fired furnace to make ash/lime mortar which, apart from being a very good medium for setting bricks or masonry, had the advantage that it set very slowly and could be 'knocked up' again with water to make it fit to use for about a week after manufacture. In this part of the country the mills were driven off the tail end of the shed line shaft using clinker from the mill boilers. There is much evidence in the Calf Hall Shed Company minutes of this being done at their mills over the Years.
A forgotten corner now as commercial Portland cement is used to make mortar using sand (and hydrated lime if the builder is a good one!).

Ash Lime mortar made by hand before the days of mortar mills. Made with slaked lime and ashes, this mortar was very slow setting but when fully hard was much harder than modern cement sand mortars.

This image intrigues me. I have no memory where it came from or what it is but it's obviously on Manchester Road in Barlick opposite the old Co-op and Police station and is an element in a procession forming up. I have never heard of a pipe band in Barlick. The caption for the pic is 'Moreland Johns third from left'.

This is the Stuart Gun Tower which we used to haul the 17pdr A/tank guns when I was in the tank busting business. They were a fun vehicle! Started life as an American Honey light tank but soon discarded and converted to tractors by taking the turrets off. They had two large Chrysler V8 engines and Hydramatic transmission and were the easiest thing to drive I ever saw. They drank petrol but that was no problem for us, we weren't paying.
A long forgotten vehicle but still carries fond memories for me.

I am not going to say that worker's solidarity is a forgotten corner, the present actions in pursuit of higher wages give the lie to that but I get the impression that 'workers of the world unite' was more an article of faith in the inter war years than it is now. That may be the difference between these ladies and workers today.

There will be a bit of a walk as there is no parking at the house. I could drop you near the bottom of the field though so it would be no further than the Coop or the benches in Barlick.

Will do Stanley.

Your picture is pre refurbishment, the house still has its corrugated asbestos roof and if you look carefully you can see that the stack for the fire is coming away from the gable near the top. That is because the gable wall was still the original corrugated iron from 1912 with render on the top. Originally the gable supported a stove pipe from the pot bellied stove. The fireplace was fitted in the 30's which of course required the flue and stack building. It was only fastened with a single tie that was effectively the original J bolt for the previous pipe that had broken through the corrugated sheet and was no longer tying the stack, effectively it was free standing? Not long after then we launched the Renovation Appeal Fund which was very well supported by the unions. It gave us a start on the refurbishment which effectively is still going on. Latest upgrade has been the front steps which were rebuilt in the 1930's, they have also had a hand rail fitted.

It's 1979 and we are in San Francisco. This large wooden house is about to be moved bodily to another site. This is an alien concept to us but is quite common in the US. I had to leave SF before it was moved but saw the whole process in other places.
