It's amazing the different lives that buildings go thru, whether we are still here or long gone.

Dead right Cathy and it can be fascinating trying to knit the evidence together. I haven't worked out the weir at Parrock yet! But It's there.....

Here's another old view of Barlick. All I can say with certainty is that it is before 1935 because the brick building erected by Ashby at Ouzledale isn't there. However, it could be a lot earlier. It was amongst some pics I was given that were mainly around 1890. Note that Ouzledale has a chimney. You can spend hours on something like this. Click to enlarge. (Come to think, Bankfield 1900 isn't there so go for 1890)

I posted this pic earlier but I don't think I had the information to hand then. "Dogs of Devon Feb 1st 1930. Barlick photographer. Dogs of Devon or Foiled Again was an operetta popular with local societies."

This was at Sutton Coldfield show in 1976 but is a reminder of what would be a common sight in Barlick until between the wars. Horsey type men judging heavy horses. There were hundreds of them on the streets of Barlick until well after WW1.

All the buildings in the foreground are instantly recognisable today. The big difference is that Clough Mill and its chimney are no longer there.

Cathy, it's at the end of Church street. Imagine standing on the pavement opposite Jepp hill but on the opposite side of the road and looking towards Wapping.

Here's almost the same view in 2005. As Cath said recently, it's amazing how quickly the townscape changes. It is different again now of course.

The gas main on Lockfield Drive is one of Barnoldswick's forgotten corners. There's been up to 4 Transco crews finding leaks for over 3 weeks - and still it bubbles up.

Many of the old services in Barlick are forgotten corners. I always examine holes in the road, like an archaeological dig!

Image

Here's a typical old service pipe in Eat Hill Street. In case you're wondering, mine is a new connection straight off the main which was refurbished by Balfour Beatty a few years ago. This service pipe is the responsibility of the landlord and is still being used.

Exactly right Cath and the same effect eventually. You'd be amazed at the number of old properties that are still served by lead pipes.
