Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Perhaps Stanley misspelt it and it should read 'Wobbledom'.
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Sorry - I quickly read it as Wimbledon - hence my response. Won't do any harm to point people to the meaning though. I had to explain it to both my (graduate) kids.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I inserted 'sic' after Wombledom to indicate that this was an accurate transcription of my thought. I hope that this is now clear....
The fact that what seems to be the collective destructive tendency in the Westminster Village is having an effect on my peace of mind. Must go into the shed!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I did say sorry - but being pedantic 'sic' is an abbreviation of 'sic erat scriptum' meaning 'thus was it written' - indicating a written source, rather than a thought.

Yup. That's how I wrote it......
Tiz, I think David would be justified in taking that as an insult to his intelligence.....
The fact that I had no motivation for shed work yesterday.... I reckon that the present state of governance in the UK is making me poorly!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I think it should be noted that today is the 100th anniversary of the start of the battle of the Somme.
7.28am on July 1st 1916 in the trenches of the Somme, whistles blew to signal an action that would consume 1 million men in the 141 day battle that followed. The darkest day in British military history 19,240 British soldiers were killed on the first day.
Lest we forget.

Indeed you are right. I will withdraw from the contest now like a gentleman.
Quite unrelated but for some reason it reminds me of the quote -
"I was wrong once, I thought I'd made a mistake but I hadn't"

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
My mother's father, a South African, was in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and Hampshire Regiment and fought on the Western Front and in Salonika. He was wounded and evacuated back to Blighty but I know little more than that because his war record was among those lost in the Blitz in WW2. All we have are his medal records. My mother didn't know how he joined up - was it in SA or did he come to Britain and then join? I recall seeing it written that the men joining from the Commonwealth were placed in the Northern Irish regiments but I don't know if that's true.

What an easy time the news media are having. No problem filling pages or air time... I suppose next week it will be Chilcot and the Blair defence..... (They have given him enough time to get his strategy together....)

Tizer, I need a name. My Maternal Grandfather was with the RAMC in Salonika and I have his diary listing they that he treated.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Thanks Thomo. His name was William George Tyler. The medal roll shows him as 19183 in the Hampshires and as 41369 in the Royal Inniskillings. That's the order on the roll but I don't know if that means it was the chronological order in which he served. He's listed for `Star' and it has a `15' inked in front of the word. `Theatre of war served in' is 2A and `date of entry' therein is 22.11.15 (does that mean date of entry into the theatre of war or date of entry into the medal roll?). Under Remarks it has `Serving'.
My grandfather recovered from his wounds in England, married the nurse who had looked after him and sailed back to South Africa in 1921 with his wife and first child. I have a small autograph book that he carried on the voyage and in which he made this drawing...

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Thomo, we must chat at some time. Found some RAMC stuff in the Mother-In-Laws stuff mentioning Salonika Too, number of postcards sent. It seems that RAMC assigned persons did not always travel with 'regiments' in the same way as others. Werent the Commonwealh Stars given out in 1915 for some reason, rather than end of war?
