Yes, and in many other places too. It beggars belief that governments and security forces paid big money to buy these bogus devices and never even looked inside one to see if it had anything useful, and never tested them to see if they work. They've been in use at airports in a number of countries and it's possible that people have died because bombs couldn't be detected by these devices. Likewise people killed by suicide bombers. Those who authorised purchase seem to have fallen for the same hocus pocus as that put out by sellers of so much other stuff these days. Ignorance still rules, it seems. The bloke who sold the devices had his business in Yeovil, I understand, but he lived a bit too close for comfort for me. One of our friends is a daughter of a local farmer and he lives almost next door to the man!

Bankfield Street - could this be the name of the short terrace which used to the to the right of the entrance to Bankfield? I recall fewer than a handful of houses on the row.

I've seen a pic of said terrace on this site somewhere, couldn't comment on the name though (being an economic migrant to Barlick), there is a Bankfield Terrace in Colne as well as Bacup

There is this one, but you cant quite see it for Oak Terrace opposite. You can see George St above and behind the mill on the other side of the canal.

Looking at the 1939 Register, Bankfield Street is listed between Bankfield Terrace and Bankfield Cottages. There are odd numbers 1 to 11, so seven properties. Find My Past places it (on the 1939 OS Map) on the road going up to Eastwood Farm...now Weets View? I'm not sure how accurate that will be.

Bankfield Street the main roadway through Bankfield Shed. A row of three/four terrace houses underneath the letter "F" in Bankfield St.. One was a physiotherapist George Rumbald, one the stationery store I think.

Bankfield St. From Ken & Wendy's lead if you go to Lancashire Mario Maps, home in on Bankfield Shed on the standard map then tick the 1940's aerial Photos you can get a good image of the short row of houses in the middle.

After the first of the "carrot top" Top Gears, which was a bit of a low point. I got to quite enjoying the later ones. As I've said before Chris Evans is an irritating twit but at least he isn't a bigoted irritating twit.

I forget who he was but I once saw a comment from a general complaining that every time he fought a battle it was on the junction of four maps.....

Here's the 1892 25" OS of Coates Bridge. Doesn't tell us a lot I'm afraid but interesting nevertheless. The Aerial pic is most informative. It was done in 1963 and clearly shows the terrace of six houses embedded in the site. Probably built post 1900 when the mill was built for essential labour like the engineers. If they were odd numbered, almost certainly starting from what was originally intended to be Bankfield Street No 3 is the second house from the street.

Bankfield Shed will soon be following Bankfield Street and Bankfield Cottages onto the sheets of old maps. Demolition is underway - I took this picture last Friday.

The oldest parts of the site are due to be flattened, apart perhaps the two storey section of the old mill now used as offices. (Though I've heard a rumour that that is due to go as well.) The buildings north of where the contractors are working (which I think may have been original test bed buildings?) have already gone.



It won't be long before there's very little northlight roof left in Barlick.

I suspect once they get the roof off, it will come down a lot quicker......

The first element of demolition is always the careful removal of anything recyclable. Slates and good roof timbers have a value as do clean stone flags, good stone like copings etc. The boilers went long ago.....

From left to right, low level building with slot in it was a machine gun post WW11.
Gable end with infilled arch, compressor house Right hand building just below cherry picker is a "Lancashire" boiler still in situ, bought as a boiler but always used as an air receiver.

Took this one yesterday afternoon, but doesn't look much different today.

Note the safety man on the canal towpath... suspect RR paying top dollar for the demolition.

I'm told that the access into the northlight area from the two story office block etc is being walled up in readiness for the demolition, so my info about that section coming down to is duff.

No, it's just what this topic is intended for, current events.
The usual demolition contract is that the demolition contractor buys the right to demolish the structure. If there is sufficient value in the recyclable materials in the structure to cover costs and give a profit this is a positive sum. However, if the cost of demolition exceeds the value it is a negative figure, that is Rolls would end up paying the contractor. Any extra safety measures would impact on this calculation.
But, Rolls like things done their way and it may be that they are not using the usual contract.
Worth noting that demolition contractors are smart cookies, they have to be, they are working in a highly competitive industry. When N&R contracted to demolish Ellenroad they offered a very large premium and the Coates management were delighted to find they could make money out of getting rid of the old building. I warned them at the time not to count their chickens. By the time the contract finished Norman Sutcliffe had claimed the premium back and then some because of extras claimed by N&R as Coates made changes in the method as the job progressed. It can be a complicated business!
Breaking news as I sit here, see THIS for the shootings in Dallas. Too early to comment but it's quite clear what has initiated this response. I don't condone it but is anyone really surprised?
