Be helping Sally celebrate her birthday. She's the same age as me, but only for a while as she would tell you if asked. :extrawink: :sunny3: :happybd:

You are quite right about the water Maz, I still remember the horrendous consequences of drinking water laced with dead mice in Denmark (Not that one, the one in the SW corner of Oz.)
I shall be busy burning free leccy for cooking and washing, do an hour or so i9n the shed and watch the Japanese GP at Suzuki. A perfect day!

Fancy remembering the first day you met your spouse. I mean, I remember the moment, but couldn't tell you the exact day or date, or what day of the week it was. We can remember the date of our wedding ( day/ month) but always have to look up the year, as neither of us ever remember it! We have to get the darn certificate out...

I can, it was a Friday after a dance at the village hall in Gisburn. It was the 2nd of February and it was the night before one of my mates wedding and we were out in the town. I heard the music and wandered up to see what was going on. February 2nd is also the anniversary of Buddy Holly's death and I heard them playing "Raining in my Heart".

I don't remember dates, it's a blind spot. I have a theory it's because anniversaries were never celebrated when I was a kid as my mother and father never married. I can remember it was November 1959 when I married and it was raining but like Maz can't remember the date. Does it matter?

Its easy to remember this one. I was on a sixth form conference to Durham University to introduce us to university life and help our applications. We were given free admission to the freshers ball. It was Bobs freshers ball. I knew it was a saturday therefore and it was the first week of University term. Now as it happens one year later exactly was the day i went off to university in Salford and the day my Mum and Dad moved from the northeast to Burnley. 1968 was a leap year therefore these days fell on a Monday. Thus the date sticks in my mind

Pink Floyd were playing at the ball, Bob asked me to dance. It was far too noisy to talk so we spent the rest of tbe evening in the coffee bar talking. He was the first man/lad i had met who talked about all sorts and not just himself. We found we had loads in common.

My parents always celebrated the anniversary of their first date (May 8th) as it was their only date before he sailed off to the war in the Middle East. The next time they met was 1944, Mum had arranged a special license by the time Dad arrived back in Bradford and they were married a couple of days later.
I remember the first conversation I had with Col, I was serving behind the bar in a very busy Boat House Inn in Chester and Col was talking to a regular customer about Stranger in a Strange Land. I had spotted Col through the crowds before and been drawn to his long hair and beard, so I took the opportunity to join in, having just read the book myself. I think that was March 1975 and we were married on July 5th just over 3 months later. That's easy to remember being the day after Independence Day!

Doing more of my son's ancestry ( on his father's side). Have been making a list of cemetery plots in our oldest city cemetery as it is within walking distance from a 2 night stay in a 5 star motel for us next month. It is quite difficult to find parking close to the old city cemetery, so being able to walk there from our motel will be so convenient. I've mentioned before that my son has some thrilling ancestors...no convicts ( though there was a bumbling con artist). They all came as free settlers from England/Ireland/Prussia/Germany. Brave and resourceful folk, who did well, in a harsh land. I shall find the task enjoyable...

In broad terms, his Irish relatives went into Baking, his UK ancestors bought/built/ran hotels and his Prussian/ German ancestors established wineries and went into politics!

It's fascinating isn't it Maz. I remember my surprise when I found out how varied my ancestry is on my father's side. The basic reason for the variety was what you have identified, a common drive to migrate in search of something better. It seems that as a filter, this was a very refining mechanism. I'm very proud of the fact that I am a mongrel in most people's terms.

It was Bob’s sister’s funeral today. We were up at 4.45, picked Claire up at 6.00 and got to Gloucester for 10.35 just in time for 11 o clock service. Left at 1.30 and got home at 7.30 pm. Its been a long day. Absolute chaos on the M5 all day so had to come back through Derbyshire.

A sad day.

I'll be taking advantage of the free leccy of course, washing cooking and cleaning but that doesn't kick in until 9AM so until then I shall occupy myself in the shed. I have one daughter in Scotland and the other in Bali so no point in telephone calls this morning!
