Would it be an RTTY modulator / demodulator? Thanks Ian, you have restored my self esteem. I expect Stanley will know more about them than I do though.

I cheated a bit and came up with http://www.textandgraphics.eu/subdomain ... o7070.html
Which I suppose is related on Telex communications , but their spec seems to go to 850?Hz as well. 170hz apparently was some kind of movie.
I guess the box could have something to do with the recent : http://oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/viewtopi ... 592#p27592 and http://oneguyfrombarlick.co.uk/viewtopi ... 594#p27594 posts by Wendyf.

Anyone wanting to be even more confused on RTTY , courtesy of free.fr (!) http://f1ult.free.fr/DIGIMODES/MULTIPSK/RTTY_en.htm

Bang on Tripps, the gubbins were all self built including the PCB's, not an off the shelf job. The shift frequencies were a bit of a giveaway if Googled. I'm going to start a new thread in the Amateur Radio section for homebrewed kit.

Gloria was in the right area and Bodge got it dead right. It's a catch plate used to drive a work-piece mounted between centres.

Image

You need a collection of dogs of different shapes and sizes which clamp on the work-piece and engage with the catch pin on the plate.
Here's the next one for you to mull over.

Tripps, in this case you're right but not because I have any knowledge of electronics, just that I've read Ian's new topic on his Shack. Sorry If I get to sound like a know-it-all, I'm definitely not. I have a limited store of knowledge and love sharing it!

Only a guess from the colour, Jewllers rouge ! sorry Tripps if youre wondering why engineers and jewllers need rouge

Looks like a rough cast block of soft metal, ready to be melted down and used, to me. White metal for bearing shells?

Bodge is right. Picador buffing compound for dressing buffing wheels. This one is jeweller's rouge for use on non-ferocious, the compound for steel is a white block.

Try this one....

Is that a drift slot ?

I agree - almost certainly Bodge.

My previous remark about SCG's range of knowledge was genuine admiration. He has experienced a great deal over the years. Not infallible, but impressive. Latest example - Sue mentions Healey Dell - he knows who pointed the stonework, and has a photo of it readily to hand . Worth the price of admission on its own.

Aw shucks....... Thanks for that David, I have a warm glow. You're right, a varied career and being a nosey bugger!
I'll spoil it all now by saying you are both wrong! Have another look and try again. Clue, made by David Brown at Huddersfield when they were a great firm!
PS. What's a drift slot?

Adjustable reamer/boring bar?

Is it some sort of ratchet??? Apologies for technical terms

drift slot, an aperture in a morse taper sleeve where a tapered drift is used to to put pressure on a drill tang to aid ejection of same

Bodge, I knew that but couldn't see the relationship. Our new contributor tmason has got it, what a splendid first post! It's a very expensive adjustable reamer/boring tool. I think DB's must have made them for finishing bearing housings in gear box cases. Carbide tips on the blades and I can't remember how I got it, one thing is certain, it would be for nowt! Right, try this one....

Would this be a headstock morse taper adapter ?

Glo, you're right, it's a hardened bush but not for a jig, Tmason is getting there, it's a Morse taper adapter but what for exactly?

To convert Morse tap into Esperanto? Rosetta Stone style?

It fits in the head stock, thus enabaling the facillity to turn between centres, but you will still need a dog

You engineers speak a different language to us mere mortals. :geek:

Does the dog guard the facility whilst your head turns in the soup?

I think you need a bit of a nudge. Here's a clue:

It's a large version of a pin chuck, no clue what it's called in the giant size.

Colette would have grasped the use for it if she was reading the post, but she would need a draw bolt, but not for her cross bow!
