I think we've got to give it to China.

Quite a impressive bit of clairvoyancing although it could be that being 7 hours in front of us he knew what it was before Stanley put it on?

I was referring to the previous object (wrongly?) which I assume prompted Stanley to put up the latest object. Sorry, I'm not a clairvoyant.

Loved the answers and yes, right on all counts, it was China that triggered it and Kev got it right.
Perhaps the most successful tool, I have ever made.....

Hee hee! Spot on Gloria! Original Sykes Pickavant, lovely quality and one of those tools you hardly ever need but when you do they are a godsend!
Next for shaving?

Mystery solved.
A long time ago I posted an image of a local type of water wheel, it may have been in the waterwheel thread. Because there were bits missing we couldn't decide what it was used for. I think we came to the conclusion that it was possibly for processing flax or similar fibre after retting. I said I would look into it next time I saw one. Earlier this month I saw a small demonstration version of one these wheels and so I am able to explain it. It is an irrigation water wheel. The water in the stream or mill race drives the wheel. Across the outside of the wheel frame are hollow bamboo 'cups' set at an angle. They fill with water at the bottom of their travel as they dip into the stream and then empty at the top of the travel. The water comes out at 90 degrees to the wheel with enough throw to clear the river bank and empty into the rice fields.
The wheel is turning anti-clockwise in this picture.

Is it an old Tailors ruler, or it could be fixed to a bench for measuring longer lengths of material in a shop.

I would concur with the tailors rule, my mum used to have one.
