I'll steal Ian's thunder and tell you it's the 'taking in door' on the end of the old Co-op on Manchester Road, now the Strategy bar. But here's a bonus....

Image

Funny how you can look at something many times and one day suddenly realise what you are looking at! This is the gable end of the old Cooperative HQ in Railway street. I have often noted the large window on the second floor and it was only last night that the penny dropped following this mystery object. Look at the smaller window on the floor above directly over the large one. This was where the cat head protruded to serve the hoist which lifted goods up to the large 'window' which is in fact the old taking in door. Clear as day but it's taken me long enough to fathom it!
By the way, the window below was once much larger and was a shop window. The actual entrances to the building were on Cooperative Street.

Seem to remember this could be the bridge in the canal that became redundant when the canal was diverted near Greenberfield locks.

You're all in the right field, transport and tunnels but nobody has their finger on it yet.

Is it the tunnel under the canal near County Brook?

I think these are icicles not stalactites, Stalactites (tites hang down mites grow up) so you see all those £millions trying to educate me haven't been totally wasted.

P is right and it's perhaps time I came clean. Very few people have been here. It's the base of one of the air shafts that ventilate the old Standedge Tunnel under the Pennines near Huddersfield. It was very cold weather and the up-welling air was freezing the water coming down the shaft. Yes, I was breaking the law!
Next for shaving?

The way I was taught to remember the difference is stalactite (top) stalagmite (ground).

What do you think is going on here?

Its either slicing a bit of bacon or a rock/gemstone, could even be Tizerite.

Did I ever tell you about when I got the sack for having my fingers in the bacon slicer?

She got the sack too.

Well that mystery object was identified quickly - Cathy and Plaques are too familiar with my hobbies and interests. Slicing rock and mining just about cover it, I couldn't expect you to know the location too. It's a slab saw used by a Cornwall man to cut rock and mineral samples to expose the interior and make specimens for ornaments or for collectors. It's sited in a tunnel that was originally made for an old mineral railway and is still below his house, an old blowing house in the Luxulyan Valley. How about that for a basement! Nice one Tiz. Tunnels under houses..... Newton once told me about visiting a correspondent of his somewhere near you who had a 5" gauge railway in his garden but due to the shape of the site couldn't build a continuous loop. When he got there the bloke and his wife were in the middle of digging a tunnel under the house so he could steam his locos non stop. Now why does that remind me of Sue and Bob?
P. Must face west.... Is it in the Taylor street area?

Clue, don't use logic to find this remember its a bit of Barlick advertising. Less than 150 yards from Stanley's house and can be seen on Google street view. I'm going to have to downgrade his spotters badge if he doesn't pick up.

Good God! I shall have to have another stab at it. Names on blocks of houses are common on Rainhall Road on the East side of the railway bridge and that's about the right date for the build. O one of the terraces there?
