PanBiker, Tried again last night and failed. Brain dead I suppose. Gimme is a golfing term for giving a near putt a pass. So I tried building 'Match play' etc: into it. No joy, its over to the size 12 hats.

They were real enough in 1940 at Bletchley, good job some folk took notice!

They would not have come across this one though although the concept of a common key was well known.

The key is ABBA (the pop group). They all reference song titles.

Would never have got that. I discounted ABBA as being too modern, I'm sure they weren't going during the days of Bletchley Park and I didn't know the words anyhow.

The puzzles are set by modern day cryptologists so all is fair game which is why I mentioned the internet. There are historical ones later on in the book. GCHQ and its genus the Code & Cypher school have been in existence since 1919 so next year is their centenary. Bletchley in a way was phase two of the operation, Chelmsford phase three. The channels they have to monitor will be mind boggling, this is another reason why I am in favour of staying in the EU.

By the way of retaliation here's one you can solve by observation.

PanBiker, as a honourable member of OG your final word is good enough. I don't think there is any deep reasoning on the ones I've put up so far but they may get more difficult as time moves on. If there is any of this type I'll say 'Why?'
Funny you should say that Kev. I often play these computer chess games at night. Usually I win comfortably but as I get tired the bloody thing beats me.

Well for closure and before I forget. The first one was all about the number of consonants. The second one all about the letter A. All of Adams likes have multiple A's so it follows that he will use Monarch Airline rather than Virgin.

Well done. This one took me longer than I expected. Set off on the wrong series plus the fact that it doesn't follow the Roman numerical rules but uses our modern system of summation. Not easily spotted.

It took me longer to type it up than spot the connection, Jasper Conron was the give away for me. My training puzzles must be working as I am starting to think outside the box. In Neo terms I am now starting to see the Matrix, watch out the Mr Smith's.

Birthday Party

My son Hadrian held a birthday party last week. None of the children who came were aged 4 or less. Four of them were aged 5, nine of them were 6 and one each were 8 and 9. How many 7-year-olds attended?

These things are driving me mad. Reminds me of the Lancashire County 11+ which I recall used a similar type of question. Perhaps not as difficult as these though.

I cheated on the planets one, and googled. I would have got the consonants one right but spelled Mosimann wrong on my 'working out' sheet.
